Benchrest 100yd 5x5 Challenge Inspired by Franklink

Last edited:
I’m going to try and shoot one each time I short as the first target of the day, with no more than 1 or two shots prior to allow the reg to settle or whatever.
I very much get that in competitions, but as a pester I almost always put that first shot on paper. I shoot 4 airguns "regularily."
My TX will put the first 1 or 2 shots an inch low @ 30Y... Every. Single. Time. (Hoping my ongoing rebuild solves that!) Im not selling it as its consistent ....I can deal with that.
My HW50 and S510 are dead nuts on that first shot....moving on.
Lastly....mmm the Ghost. Its first few shots are usually no good but; I never know what will happen when I pull that trigger for the first few times! Its not trackable, its shotgun pattern. I want to know that as a pester! And no its not my tune, or my ammo, or me...its the gun. Once warm its a lazer. Tons of very small pests down once its 'warmed up' (read valve/reg are happy) Once the blinking weather warms up I plan to start a "first cold group of the week thread"!
As for 100Y shooting I hope to try this 5x5...by spring for sure! Just dont laugh at my first group of 5🤪

Well, I went out and shot a card. It was cold, so cold that I couldn’t bend my fingers lol. It was too windy to shoot, but in the spirit of the challenge I did it any way. I will measure it tomorrow. Yes, I know exactly where the other pellets hit on target #2 lol. This was post cleaning the barrel with Ballistol. 8mph crosswind.IMG_2905.webp

Went out and shot a quick 5x5 with the Sonoran. The wind kicked my butt. Plus I decided to crank on the turrets several times. Not worth averaging. But there you go. Now I’ve fallen prey to my desire to shoot a decent slug group, I’ve been swaging slugs and raised the regulator. The cold temps were playing havoc on the air supply anyway.

I shot one target with AEA 50.5gr pellets and one with 45 gr AEA. Variable wind was dispersing them some. But there were a couple of decent groups.

I decided to shoot a 5x5 with .30 slugs. I ended up shooting two. The first one had an average MOA group size of 1.55 with variable 5-15mph winds. I shoot west to east and so it was mostly a left to right crosswind. Sonoran .30, 52.2gr slugs 845fps

This was the second card. Sonoran and 52.2gr slugs. Both strings had sub-MOA groups and probably would have had a few more, with more consistent wind. Tune was unchanged from the pellet tune.Average 1.36 MOA.

I get the same kind of results often they just dont seem to be as consistent in wind for the bc they have. Haven’t been able to figure it out.
They’ve done the best each time I’ve tried them, but I never buy enough to really experiment with them. I was considering trying for some coyotes with Sonoran. But, now that I know it’s a joke and not fit for purpose, maybe I’ll move on to another brand 😂🤣😉

Only shot one card this session.

Daystate Blackwolf and 1:22 Sub-MOA barrel with JSB MRDs.

Scored a 219 and the 6 group average was 1.6"/1.53MOA.

Given the fickle wind, and a sub par batch of MRDs, not too bad.
You need to get rid of that BW. Put it in the classifieds for $2k and I’ll help you out LOL. Just kidding. Yep, wind really puts a damper on shooting, but I guess it would get boring without some variables. Nice shooting. Are they going to give you a .30 barrel to try in the BW? It would be interesting to see how the bigger plenum rifle performs in a .30

I suppose if I asked them to run some .30 barrels through testing, they'd send some my way. I simply don't have much interest in .30.

Even a .22 @ 45-50fpe is 15-30fpe more power than the way I most enjoy airguns.

I went out this morning
Got a chance to shoot the EPIC 2 this morning after opening the valve a bit to 2.5mm. These are shots 6-30 after a full fill to 300bar. First 5 shots on this fill were adjusting the hammer spring and sighters.
Average Velocity: 917fsp
ES: 35.1
Std Dev: 7.9

I went out this morning at 7:30am. It was 32f, but not real windy. I shot three shots from the Sonoran at 101yds at the back plate. Then I shot this card using the AEA Center Punch Slugs 52.2 gr.. I thought I did better than I actually did. I was struggling with the sun and the scope. The sun rises behind my target stand. I have the best optical scope that I own on the Sonoran . It’s a Discovery Japanese ED glass 5-25x56. But it just seems washed out at 25x. I’ve always cheaped out on scopes in the past. I just don’t know if buying a better scope will improve things. Anyhow, back to today’s groups. I managed an average 1.5 MOA at 101yds with the slugs. A couple of flyers. One sounded different from all the others and that was the lower flyer on the #2 group.

Shot a couple over the weekend.

First one is from my Veteran Long, here,

The overall score wasn't great, but the average group size (bottom left) was pretty decent.

And the other one is from the Daystate Blackwolf.

Again, the benchrest score isn't great, but the average group size (bottom left) is respectable.

Winds were shifting around and it kept getting me when quartering in from bout 2 o clock, pushing pellets down and left.
