Others Low-End of Top Tier Scopes: Night Force, Tract, March Scopes

A couple of threads I found helpful on Tract Toric scopes

I have an opportunity to grab this Tract Toric 2.5-15x44 UHD FFP IR for around $800.
I am not in need of this scope and have spent a good amount on substantial purchases in recent months. I have a scope or two that I bought a while back that I still haven’t mounted, but I do use variations of said scopes on other rifles so there’s that. Right now Hawke Sidewinder, Athlon Helos BTR gen2 and Sightron STAC, Vector Continental have established my sight standard for decent glass. Anyhow, I’d like a little encouragement one way or the other about a purchasing decision. Yes, I know we enable one another to buy things related to our hobby.

My dilemma is considering that prices are going up and it’s in sale, I really don’t know if I’m missing something significant in this scope since I own no high-end traditional riflescopes. I don’t even know if this is considered high-end but it would be to me for where I am in my optics journey. BUT, I also don't know if this little tank of a scope will perform better in low light. If it does, I have no frame of reference to understand how it might compare or have an advantage over the glass in the aforementioned scopes. The Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50 FFP Mil-C is another I'd like to try, but costs about $1200 more w/14% off.

I also wonder how it compares (optically) to this March scope that costs 4x more.

If any of you have experience with the Tract Toric line I’d like to hear from you.

Well, the Athlon Ares ETR UHD 3-18x50 FFP MOA just dropped down to $584 -- pretty spectacular price.

Yeah, not top tier.... Will you notice the difference? Maybe.
Got your 50mm objective.
Full features.
31.4oz is more than your 28oz.

Cheers,

Matthias

@JungleShooter This is also an Ares model that looks appealing and on sale for around $654 right now for BF/CM.

I don't know how it compares or if it's even comparable to the Tract Toric. The weight and length are close. It has a larger objective. I'm more so interested in comparing glass.

These guys discuss Athlon models vs Tract Toric models

I also read that this Maven RS1.2 2.5-15x44mm FFP is made in the same LOW factory as the Tract Toric. I'm not familiar with this company, but their warranty seems excellent from what I read on their site. I just wanted to post this one so I can look into it further. It seems comparable. The RS1.2 MRAD has an interesting reticle. I wonder how it performs at min magnification.

If you don’t consider an Athlon Ares ETR or the step up (Cronus) as low end of the Top Tier scopes, you certainly shouldn’t consider the Tract Toric scopes to be in that class.

@Centercut I don’t know much about them other than things that I’ve read. When I viewed the Cronus, it struck me as more of a target shooting scope. I’m looking for hunting scopes. So far I’ve gotten familiar with the Helos.

Do the Cronus and Ares excel in low-light settings?

I have one of the Athlon Ares ETR 3-18x. Comes in Mil or MOA. Great glass, great hunting or PRS-NRL-22 type scope.

I’ve some small experience with this scope. The build quality is excellent as expected, however the IQ and parallax focusing ability are a bit of a disappointment to me. I believe it would be a great hunting scope but would not recommend it for HFT/UFT or most competitions. YMMV

@JoeWillie Thank you for that information.

Just to throw one more into your scope mix:
GPO GPOTAC 8X 2.5-20x50 FFP

GPO was founded by former Zeiss employees.

This particular model:
FoV = 49ft: Has a significantly wider FoV at 2.5x than the common 42y (@100y).

25.3oz (717g) light.

But the reticle (BRi) lacks windage holds.

14.8" (38cm) long.

140moa of elevation adjustment.

😊 Matthias

GPO Website:

Seller — at 918$ (reduced from the typical 1400$):

@JungleShooter I'm not a fan of the reticle in your post. This is closer to what I like after briefly glossing over it, but I'm not into illuminated red dots for my airguns.

I prefer the reticle to be illuminated. I'm in no rush. If you see something that might fit the bill, please continue to post those links.

Yes, I am no fan of that reticle either — no wind holds, and and only the center dot illuminated.

The scope you referenced —
GPO Centuri 3-18x44 (MOAi ret.) —
is also available with a 50mm objective —
BUT they are both unfortunatly SFP's....
Most from the Centuri line are SPF's.

@JungleShooter That's what I didn't see specified and I got pulled away from that tab by calls. I was trying to look at the body to determine the focal plane. Thanks for that bit of info. I'd read about GPO on The Hide. I also read about Maven. Those Maven scopes look really nice.

I don’t have experience with top-tier traditional riflescopes. However, I have been looking at Tract, March, and Night Force scopes for hunting in low-light environments. In your experience, which of these brands have good light transmission and image quality in low-light? I prefer something under 28oz within a magnification range of no lower or greater than 2-20x magnification and preferable with a 50mm objective bell. If can be 1”, 30mm, or 34mm tube. I’m only interested in FFP scopes.
If I were thinking of hunting again I would step up and get Night Force Our Military uses this brand they are next to impossible to break or damage they hold settings and are a robust scope you only need one.

I would like a lower minimum parallax setting [on the Schmidt & Bender 3-18x44 FFP scope].

Yeah, I would, too!! 😆

Especially for $3.800 (that's the discounted sales price, not MRSP)....! 🤦🏻‍♂️

22y minimum parallax is not acceptable for my kind of shooting.
If most scope manufacturers* can get us a 10y parallax —
WHY NOT Schmidt & Bender, Leupold, Burris, Nikon, SIG Sauer, Crimson Trace, Kahles, Steiner, Zeiss [few!]❓❗❓

*Nightforce (many, and increasing), Zero Compromise, March, German Precision Optics GPO, Hawke, SWFA, Element, Bushnell (many), Arken (many), Athlon (many), IOR/Valdada, Primary Arms (many), Sightron (many), Vortex (some), Falcon (UK), Riton, Cabela, Optisan, Apex (Canada), MTC, Vector, Trijicon (many), Swampfox, etc. etc.
