Ghost BRK Ghost Review

Did some shooting with the Ghost this evening.

Shot 2 EBR cards with .20/18.9grain NSA slugs, and two cards with the .20/15.89grain JSB pellets.

100 yards.

Slug results first. Two sighters for the one card, one sighter for the second card, so all 63 shots shown here. I just don't shoot a ton of sighters, not a true benchrest guy I guess. Man I'm always impressed when I shoot these .20 slugs. Just seems too easy.

And here are the two cards with the pellets. Couple more sighters here, but still not many.

After the above I brought the traps in closer, setting one of them at 55 yards. Spun the wheel down to "MIN" for 19.8fpe and shot these using the .20/13.73grain JSBs. This is from bucket and sticks. 5 shots per group. Some got away from me, but the bottom left and top right were pretty good.

No photo but after the above, me and my youngest son cut a 6inch pumpkin in half with pellets. We set it at about 20 yards. He was using his field target gun, and me the Ghost of course. We just made a horizontal line across the pumpkin with multiple shots, it was surprisingly easy. Silly fun, but definitely fun.

Just plastered this big euro.

Got home from night shift and he was sitting on the fence near the back of my property, just about 5 yards shy of the 125yard permanent steel target hanging from the same fence. So 120ish yards.

Home court advantage with this one, didn't need to laser him or consult Strelok. I know 21 clicks is good for 100 yards so I dialed it to 25, educated guess. He was broadside to me and the 32fpe .20 slug went through and through, both wings and his chest. Mighty solid THUWUMP when it hit.

One and done. Man I love a single shot kill like that! I'm not against walking shots in, but it's more satisfying to make the first one count.

I of course blew off two shots in the gunroom prior to the kill shot, those two were just dry fires.

Those single take , one shot, one kill moments are awesome. Some of them almost happen in slow mo

Hoping to use the slugs for one of the long range field target night matches next week so I've been getting actual dope data on them. Everything prior with the slugs has been from Strelok, and was pretty close to actual, but as usual, not exact.
So that true dope data just became a new column on my bottle sticker.

It's smaller than it looks (size 6.5font).
Left column is distance, the rest are click values. Since I'm using a 1/10mil per click scope, the printed data is easily converted to holdovers. Furthermore, the scope allows a guy to zoom out and use a combo of holdovers and clicks to REALLY stretch it out.
PXL_20230929_032536150.webp

The sub 20 column has been verified to 100 yards on paper. And the 15.89 and 18.9 columns have been verified on paper to 135 yards, and much further on pests.

The three columns are an amalgamation of shots taken on paper, at pests, and data from Strelok. While the wind is always the wildcard, I'm pretty confident in the vertical with most of this information. The main gray area is the 100-250 yards with the 13.73s, and that's also the combination that I may never even use, as 20fpe even out to 100yards is a stretch.

I don't love having two zeros for the 15.89 and 18.9 "tunes" but I DO love not needing to rezero the scope when I switch projectiles.

Kinda interesting to compare the three and how it shakes out as distance increases. BC of 0.044 with the 13.73, 0.048 with the 15.89, and 0.09 with the 18.9.

Having a physical dope sheet is much quicker than needing to open my phone to access Strelok. AND my dope sheet is more accurate than what Strelok gives me, since much of it has been verified and/or is based on real-world shooting.

Range em, smile and dial, take the shot, and then smile some more. 😁

Shot these 4, 10 shot groups at just shy of 20fpe, 55 yards. Stool and sticks, Hunter style. Bottom right I dialed the turrets for but the other three were holdover. I was curious to see if dialing would be a better group than holdover, but they're about the same. Had some left to right quartering in wind during these shots. I yanked one out to the middle of nowhere in the upper left group everything else was good shots, or wind effects.

From a benchrest the .20/13.73s will shoot better than this from the Ghost, but I'm satisfied with this from Hunter position.

Circles are 1 and 3/8" across, penny in the photo for perspective.

You are correct unfortunately for us they probably won’t since they can do basically the same with 177 and 16 grainers. Too bad
there would be a minimum order for barrels say 500? they are bespoke so would need time to be ordered, drawn up and them made. They would then need to be tested on a gun, a new magazine set up and a new probe folowed by more testing and setup for the new caliber ...maybe if there was 300 people lobying for it rather than 3!:sneaky:

Between the various social media places where I've posted about the .20 there are quite a few more than 3 people interested.

Parent company Daystate has released rifles in .20 in the past. Since they use Lothar barrels and LW already makes blanks in .20, it's just a matter of Daystate/BRK putting in an order with Lothar for .20 barrels made to the Daystate/BRK proprietary specs. And yes, machining mags and bolts.

As mentioned previously in this post, industry leaders are aware and monitoring the results of the .20 Ghost. This was confirmed in private messaging again just a few days ago.

I've been thinking of names for if a factory .20 Ghost materializes. My first thought was to call it the CRG. Cole R Ghost, like the LPR, Lauren Pearson Rifle.

But then I realized that I'd like to give my machinist friend some credit since he made it possible. So "The CBG" is what I propose. The Cole/Bobby Ghost. And there's a fun ode to my profession in there. A CABG procedure is a coronary artery bypass graft, commonly necessary after a heart attack. So, the Ghost .20 (or the CBG) is so good you'll need a CABG after the heart attack you have after shooting it.

A big week for the little .20 Ghost....

Sniper Class American Field Target at Extreme Benchrest
On Thursday I campaigned the JSB .20 Heavy (15.89) at the long range/high power version of field target at EBR. The Sniper class is .22 and below, but to the best of my knowledge I was the only competitor shooting a caliber other than .22. The .22/25.4grain Monster RD is the pellet of choice for long range .22 in high level competition such as this. Most people shoot those .22/25.4s in excess of 940-950fps, which puts them up around 50fpe. In contrast, the Ghost .20 pushes the 15.89s to 915fps for best accuracy, resulting in exactly 29.55 fpe. In other words, I was competing with 60% of the fpe as the rest of that class, the veritable "knife at a gun fight."

Surprisingly it went well for me, all things considered. There were a total of 40 shots, 8 of which were standing bipod.

On the first lane I lost one point, but didn't miss any kill zones. I watched the pellet fly into the middle of the desired impact point (kill zone). It was an aligator target around 50? yards, with a kill zone that was probably 2.5-3 inches across. For the Ghost, an absolute gimme, since it'll shoot 10 shot groups into dimes at that distance. This was my first inkling that I was going to have trouble with my measly 29.55 fpe. Simply not enough energy to knock down some of the targets. Score = 7/8.

The second lane was the 8 standing bipod shots. I clean missed three of them, two misses were on the same target... a maybe 1/2 inch kill zone at around 28-32yards. The third miss was the last shot of the lane, and wasn't a hard shot, I just pulled off of the kill zone as the trigger broke. So, 5/8 on the offhand lane. Going 5/8 on the offhand lane ultimately broke the 3 way tie, in my favor. Score at this point is 12/16.

The third lane had the longest targets. One of which was at 102 yards. I made it fall on one of my shots, and the wind got me on the second shot at that target-watched the pellet get pushed away from kill zone and impact the face plate. I also missed both shots on the 90ish yarder, last target on this lane. Clean misses, wind got me and pushed me out of kill zone to face plate hits. So now I'm up to 17/24, still happy that I've only lost one point due to not enough energy.

On the fourth lane I went 8/8. Cleaning this lane had me feeling my oats. The target I remember the most here was a howling coyote, seems he was around 80 yards. I had to hold left of kill zone for the first shot, and the wind switched and I had to hold right of kill zone for the second shot on him. Both were correct wind reads and he fell for both shots. Up to 25/32 now.

The fifth and last lane didn't go so well. Two of the targets would not fall, despite watching that pellet sail right into the kill zone multiple times. One of those two was the last target of the course and I still had my mulligan so I used it. I hit the kill zone of that target 3 times and it simply wouldn't go down. In field target if it doesn't fall, you don't get the points.

So, all said and done, official score of 29/40 with 5 points lost to bringing that knife to the gun fight (simply not enough energy). 6 absolutely clean misses. Based off kill zone hits, my score was a 34/40. Which would have been good for 2nd place in this class. The .20/15.89 has the accuracy and precision to hang with the .22/25.4grain Monster RD, but it has an obvious deficit when a certain threshold of fpe is necessary. Officially I was 5th out of 30 shooters.

Ultimate Field Target Night Match at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club
I ended the same day with another long range high power field target competition, across town at another shooting range. Slugs are allowed at this event and so I chose to run the .20/18.9grain NSAs, at about 875fps for roughly 32fpe. Also a possible 40 points in this match. 23 total shooters at this match, 17 pellet and 6 slug. I scored a 35/40, good for 3rd place in the slug class and also tied for the 3rd overall highest score. High score of the match and slug class was Thayne Simmons. Second place in slug and second high overall score was Steve M. Both of them are very talented shooters and I don't feel too bad about being beat by folks that shoot as well as they do. My 35/40 was enough to win a gift certificate to Utah Airguns. The 5 misses here were clean misses, all the kill zones I connected with made the target fall. Misses were due to unsteadiness in some cases and b/c I was looking at the wrong dope sheet for a couple of the shots. In a minimal wind situation I'm confident that the Ghost can shoot a clean 40/40 at one of these Ultimate FT matches, using the .20/18.9grain slugs. And I've not shot many gun/barrel/projectile combinations that have made me feel like a clean score at a UFT match is possible.

Pest Birds at The Dairy
I had some down time on Friday so met up with a buddy at a dairy for some bird shooting. I chose to run the .20/13.73s for the dairy shooting, obviously lots of cows around, but also buildings and equipment and simply b/c 19.5fpe is more than enough for such a situation. Furthermore, less fpe = more shots. In past dairy shoots, the volume of shots is almost unbelievable, so I knew lots of shots was what I wanted and needed for this. I shot a bunch of Euro collared doves, a handful of starlings, and a huge pile of pigeons. For the first hour or so I moved around a bunch, but the last hour was focused on pigeons. I'd gotten a couple out in the middle of a pen and the dead ones were decoying in more targets. Sat right there for an hour or so shooting bout as fast as I could load. At one point I scanned over the pile of dead pigeons, trying to get a tally. I lost count somewhere in the mid 70s. In roughly two hours I shot most of a 500 count tin of pellets. Which made me realize I've been vastly underestimating the shot count of the 19.5fpe tune with the 480cc bottle. I shot down from 240 to 200bar and refilled back up to 250, I then shot for the rest of the time on that single fill. So, I started with a mostly full tank (240bar) and for a total of 400-425 shots I filled only once. I'd estimate a full 250 fill, and shooting down to reg pressure of 128-130bar is netting me more like 200-220 shots @ 19.5fpe.
This pellet tin was full when I started at the dairy.

2nd Ultimate Field Target Night Match at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club
Saturday night was another UFT match. We had 14 shooters for this match, 8 pellet and 6 slug shooters. The wind was brutal this time around. Even with a BC up around 0.09, 20+ mile an hour gusts are hard for an airgun to contend with. I was only able to come up with a 27/40 this time, which was good for 2nd in slug class and 3rd high overall. Again Thayne Simmons was high score, and again my score was good for a gift certificate to Utah Airguns.

Conclusion
Over those 3 days I used all three "tunes" and enjoyed the heck out of the Ghost in a variety of situations. By simply spinning the hammer tension to desired setting I was able to shoot 19.5fpe for high volume shooting. 29.5 fpe with a high BC pellet for long range precision in a pellet-only competition, and finally for 32fpe with the slugs when competition rules allowed. That hammer tension adjustment was all that was needed. I used the same scope zero for all three scenarios. In fact, I have enough faith in the Ghost's ability to hold zero that I didn't even shoot any sighters for the EBR event. By having my dope sheet for each configuration pretty well worked out, it was easy peasy. The Ghost is good about that, producing repeatable fps when the available adjustments are repeated.

I have been testing quite a lot with the BRK Ghost .177 HP with the longer prototype barrel for the last 3 months and results are looking very good with both pellets and slugs 👍🎯

This barrel is not very fuzzy at all ! 🙂

Been concentrating on the slugs lately and shot anything from 10 gn up to 20 gn and in general the velocity and thereby muzzle energy is higher than shooting the original barrel. In my 23” original barrel, I usually shoot slugs well around 920-930 FPS and in the longer prototype barrel between 970-1020 FPS with the same accuracy 🙂

The 20 gn ZAN slugs I tuned down a little to get better results 🎯👻🙂

Looking very much forward to be testing a lot more with this setup 👍🙂
wowzers that is alotta fpe for a .177!! I gotta ask by 'prototype' barrel do you mean a (brk) slug barrel or a one off custom made one?! I crave a ghost in .22 myself and I know the fpe specs is with heavy pellets and the reg turned up but I do believe with a slug barrel and slugs that fpe is only gonna go up. Should be able to compete with the impact m3 for power my guess, and with alot less fussing!!

He’s testing a 28” brk barrel.

Yes this is the 28” BRK prototype slug barrel that I am testing 👍🙂🎯

Power is definitely there and will have no problem keeping up with the M3 and in the higher calibers probably will exceed in power 🙃🙂

Oh man I'm so excited to see how the ghost platform expands! I've often found myself wanting an m3 but have watched too many tear down videos, and I don't need THAT much adjustability. Excellent guns I'm sure when they work well though. My recent AA rifle has turned my attention to British quality and I appreciate all the info! I emailed BRK myself recently about the slug barrels and they got back to me saying they are still working on them, possibly out for sale next year. I cannot justify the cost (for myself) if it's just a pellet shooter but slugs capabilities and I'm all in! Also thanks to all the people who have shared their findings on this fairly new platform, I appreciate! Even if it's .20 😉

Had another monthly field target match this morning, and chose to shoot the Ghost. Put on by Garrett K of the Phoenix Airguns Club at Rio Salado Sportsman's Club. Same match site as the American Field Target portion of EBR last month. And this club and course will also be hosting the World's WFTF in 2024.

60 shot course his morning. 10 lanes, 3 targets per lane, 2 shots per target. 1 lane offhand (6 points) and one lane kneeling (6 points). The other 48 shots were from stool and sticks for Hunter class, which is what I chose to shoot in today. Id guess there were around 20 shooters.

My assigned starting lane was the offhand lane, and I got the jitters and didn't get rid of them for the entire match. I couldn't figure out why I was so nervous, my hands were literally shaking. Realized on the drive home that I was starving and had skipped breakfast, so likely low blood sugar. Thats just one of my excuses anyway. 😬

Final score was a 53/60. Which I was pretty discouraged about. I pulled four shots out of the killzone as the trigger broke. One of those was an offhand shot, pulled the shot on two kneelers, and again on one at around 50 yards. Another miss was because I forgot to hold over on an offhand shot. I missed one at an estimated 52 yards because I thought the wind was enough to hold for, held right at 9oclock on the edge of the kill zone...and hit right at nine o clock on the edge of the kill zone. Finally, the seventh miss was a 3/8kz @ 13 yards. I split the edge and it didn't go down. Didn't necessarily pull that shot, just could not hold inside of that tiny kill zone with my hypoglycemic tremor. So 4/6 offhand, 4/6 kneelers, 53/60 overall. With that score I expected to be way down the list on the scoreboard.

BUT, it was somehow good for a tie for second place in Hunter. Kent won it with a 55/60, and me and Van each had 53. Van got one more forced position shot than I did so that was used to break the tie. Other notable was Lauren P with a 54 in WFTF class. So I guess the little Ghost was good for a tie for overall 3rd highest score, looking at all classes, despite my poor performance.

Of course this is regular sub20fpe AAFTA field target so I used the JSB .20/13.73s @ 800-805fps.

Can't blame the misses on the gun this time around, 100% operator error.
