What'cha doing air gun related today?

Last edited:
I’m actually thinking about selling one or two of my Airguns 😱 to get the DRS MKII. Scary part is I already have a name picked out for it 😅.
I keep telling myself that I'm going to sell my Sonoran and buy something else and then I shoot it and think: why? I rarely shoot my Beeman underlever or the TalonP, but I'm a packrat.

I shot the .22 Condor slug barrel today and was very surprised. I have been shooting the .221 slugs to match the groove diameter but have had no luck so I tried the .218 H&N slugs I got today and the 36gr showed some potential and possibly the 38gr as well. Not only did the diameter surprise me but the speed. Seems like they like around 907-870. Apparently, I have been running everything way to fast. I have it on the Escape UL, so I had to keep stopping to fill up. Next time I will just shoot these and play with speeds and different moderator lengths. I will also put the big tank on it so I can get more consistent shots. I also found out that if a smaller top hat was used the 15gr JSB pellets would group well. Maybe someday I will get one. I shot from 30 mostly but tried the 36gr at 50 as well but I struggle with my tiny rear bag to get steady.

Very respectable performance. In my non-scientific opinion, the best advice for shooting slugs is: ignore all of the posts telling you how fast slugs have to be shot to be accurate and just try the different velocities like you would with a new pellet. I proved to myself last night that my .30 Sonoran can shoot 52.2gr slugs doing 850fps at 100yds with excellent accuracy. That's not really what the various online opinions would support. I know you already know that.

Thank you. I only have a 12x scope on that gun, I think I will get a 16X for it and maybe I will do better.

This morning I fired two 5-shot groups with my Uragan2 700, .25. I wanted to prove to myself that the tiny groups I fired with the Altaros 49.5gr from a few days ago were not a 'fluke'.

I have those JTS 43.06gr slugs in at the post office today. I would love to see those 'group' as they are way less expensive than the Altaros. But, having fired probably close to 2-dozen different slugs through the U2 already with none shooting consistently small groups like the Altaros, I have little confidence these cast JTS will match the lathe turned Altaros. I'll shoot them tomorrow and report.

Both groups completely under a dime. But, I fired some even smaller groups with this slug a few days ago!

I need to let go of several that I don’t shoot anymore. I blame my Sniper for that, well my self really. When I damaged the barrel and subsequently replaced it, for better or worse I know that I hit the lottery.

When I shot that 5X5 target at 50y back whenever it was, and every group was MOA or less I have not even topped off with gun with air since. Only pesting one shot one kill.

I am thrilled with its accuracy and paranoid about doing anything else with it lol.

Anyway, now that I have such an accurate Airgun in my midst all the others I have are diminished several to the point that I don’t want to look at them, much less shoot them.

Bill, sorry for using your post as a segue into a small rant.

when you get one that really shoots its hard to go back to just average!

🤣😂🤣 it’s funny, I’ve enjoyed every airgun that I’ve purchased, until I bought the next one.

Good shooting. I know I’m very guilty of breaking things that work lol.

At 10:49 he talks about shooting 40gr slugs at 1000fps. With the the least expensive version at under $1000, @Solo1 suggestion of the DRS MKII has a lot of merit. One thing not mentioned in the comparison of the Panthera and the Panthera MKII, is the trigger. The MKII has a better trigger and it cannot be retrofitted to the original.

If so, that would definitely be at the top of the list for two reasons - the power and I want a more traditionally styled rifle.

If you can wait a couple weeks i can let you know how the drs works out with the new hammer. I have to wait for it to get here from sweeden

I was on the phone with Thadeous from Utah Airguns talking about the FX DRS MKII Tactical. I'm interested in the .30 cal with the slug liner. Do you know anything about that gun? He said they hadn't had the opportunity to review it yet. Price was better than Pyramyd's by $150.

I only have experience with the 22 cant really speak about the 30. Are you planning on shooting long distance?

30 to 100 yrds most likely. Target and medium game, hogs, deer. I'm in the process as many members here of downsizing my collection. Used airgun market seems slower than just a few years ago. That said, I'm still going to buy it.

Well i hope you have good luck with it. I would suggest when tuning to not go to high pressures right away as the mkii 22 didn’t like it so i would assume the 30 might be the same.

Don’t they both sell it for $1150-$1299 based on barrel length?

This morning I gave the JTS 43.06gr slugs a test. As you can see, my U2 700 .25 did not show signs of liking the JTS. The rifle's current tune had these 43.06gr slugs shooting at 951fps with an ES over 15-shots of less than 3fps. They shot very uniform velocity, but sadly the accuracy was not there.

The slugs were .252" at the base drive ring and were .247" at the forward drive ring. I tested dimensions all around the diameter of these cast slugs and they were spot-on uniform (very round). Really, they were as nice looking and uniform from one to the next as any swaged slug I have ever tried.

I could try adjusting the reg. and move the velocity around but I am not going to change it. From working with about 2-dozen various slugs through this rifle, past attempts at tuning any particular slug showed little change. In other words, if the accuracy was bad at a particular velocity, it didn't really change much with a velocity change. And of course, if you know anything about the Uragan 2 then you know that tuning is limited to regulator adjustment, suppressor on or off (harmonics) and trigger tuning, that's it. Messing with the hammer spring doesn't do much of anything with the balanced valve except cause premature failure of the poorly designed poppet assembly. :( In fact, AGT tells you in the manual NOT to adjust the hammer spring! But we all know how us airgunners are about such warnings. :ROFLMAO:

These JTS slugs group about as well as half of the various brands/weights of slugs I have tested. You can understand why prior to the trying the Altaros 49.5s I have been so frustrated with this rifle, not to even mention how many times the valve poppet/o-rings/stem have broken on this rifle.

Going forward, I finally have the valve poppet issue resolved and now with the accuracy the rifle is getting with the Altaros, I think I can finally find some happiness with the Uragan 2.

The JTS Dead Center 43.06gr Slugs were not favored by my U2 700 .25.

Sorry they didn’t work out for you. What do the Altaros look like at 100y?

My home range doesn't allow me past 70yds as I would have to shoot through a woven wire fence to go further. In the near future I will load-up my bench and gear into our SXS or pickup and head a short distance out back where I can get to 100yds (or further). Now that I have seen how well the Altaros shoot at 50yds, I have every intention of getting some drop data and accuracy testing to 100yds.

The U2 is my coyote calling rifle and I choose to not shoot past 75yds as I don't feel the rifle's muzzle energy is sufficient for coyote sized animals at further distance. However, if the Altaros will hold their accuracy out beyond 50yds I will have much greater confidence in my shot placement on coyote going forward.

Accuracy with slugs is in my opinion highly dependent on form to. I think its always a bit easier to shoot pellets accurately.
