Today I’m working on getting a budget-friendly slug to perform right alongside the top-tier stuff in my .357 AEA big bore. I’m not knocking the premium makers — their prices make sense when you consider the tooling, time, and consistency they deliver. I just wanted to see if I could get similar results without beating up my wallet.
I kept seeing folks talk about pellet sizing, and that got me thinking: why not apply the same idea to slugs? So I started putting together a simple sizing setup. First step was a single-stage press — grabbed a Lee for about fifty bucks. Next, I ordered two .3575 sizing dies from NOE, which should be here in a few days.
Today I picked up the last pieces of the puzzle: silicon-carbide wet/dry sandpaper (600–2500 grit), a 0–1" micrometer with 0.0001" resolution, a ratchet thimble, carbide anvils, and some ¼" × 12" wooden dowels. Once the NOE dies arrive, I’ll polish one out to .35775. That should give me very consistent slugs — and in turn, much more consistent shot-to-shot performance.
When the time comes, I’ll get out and test everything, but it’s still too cold here right now. We’re sitting around 23° during the day and it’s going to be real cold tonight. I’m going to wait until it’s actually fun to be outside — at least into the 40s up on the hill, which is about 800 feet higher than where I am.
If this works the way I expect, I’ll have a cheaper slug running right up there with the high-end stuff, tuned specifically for my barrel and my AEA.
