250Z 250Z tuning, mainly slugs.

I'm also ordering 500 feet of paracord and some pulleys next week. I hope to have the target retrieval in place by mid June. Then I will be able to shoot pretty much whenever I want and preform much better testing at distances of at least 40, if not 60 yards. It will just depend on how clean I line a can run.
I've also got to get my climbing stand back from a buddy, those wheels are already in motion.
That’s gonna be super cool!

Got a chance to get out this afternoon for a couple hours. So far the H&N 34 grain is grouping the best, not dime but the best. The Apolo 33 is a close 2nd.

At 46yrds I've got those to at inch'ish groups, with 907 & 911 fps respectively. Not bad but some work to do. We had a front that came through overnight, so it was breezy. I'm pretty happy all in all.

Oh, the reg is set a hair over 2500 and the hammer spring is a half turn in from flush.

I just had no problem hitting some cans from the deck at 30yrds. 1st shot I aimed low as it was closer and a heavy down angle. It hit damn near the center of the crosshair. That was surprising so I took another shot and it was within a half inch from point of aim.

Now I can't wait for the target retrieval and the yotes! I'm gonna order some other brands of slugs now too now that I know the weight range that is working.

You’re getting some good speeds out of both of those…. If it was me I would try opening the reg just a little bit more and see if l you can’t get those Apolos going like 925-930. For not reason other than a hunch and my experience with the lighter slugs they tend to hit the sweet spot around that 925-960/70 or so. I’ve shot the 35gr at around 900-905 and they were very accurate but just lacking a little something….

Also don’t be afraid to tune that hammer spring for accuracy not power. Try shooting groups of 5 and giving tiny little adjustments to HS. You may even find that going backwards is the option. On my gun I’ve gotten the smallest groups with the hammer spring from like 1/4turn-3/8ths of a turn. With the slug power kit less is more from what I can tell. Maybe one day I’ll grow a pair and put the reg on like 3100psi and actually need the HS to open the valve haha… each gun is different though so it’ll interesting to see where that lands.

Also 1” at 50 yards is a little subpar for this gun. Not a critique on you or the gun at all. This gun may be a budget gun but when it’s dialed in it’s a MF’ing laser haha. Get it as accurate as you feel comfortable hunting with but you wouldn’t be unreasonable shooting for 5/8ths”-1/2” groups.

I have yet to see anyone post a coyote kill with a 250z. If you beat me too it fair play to you and I’ll just be glad it’s one of us haha.

I was really breezy yesterday. So, I can't tell if it was me or the wind. Probably a combination of both. But no, I'm not settling for 1".

It's just a pita to haul the table and everything down the hill to shoot, then haul the gun back up to recharge. Been doing a lot of yard work here and at my mom's since I got back. The body is a bit sore.

I hit two squirrels this morning from the deck. While the elevation of the impact has stayed very close to what I was getting while shooting level, it seems to have shifted left and I need to figure that out before shooting at them. (Then as I'm typing this my roommate sees one back there and I told him the impact was off left, he said let me see. He drilled it ring in the head and the impact sound was nuts) regardless, I have a lot more testing to do. I need to be comfortable with my shot placement. Also chipmunks are a Hella small target to begin with.

I shot a can from the deck last night. It's right at 30yrds but 24° down. The range finder will aslo tell you yards up/down and that says 12yrds down.

Here is the impact point.

And here's what happened when the slug hit the grate iron inside the can.

This is what was left of the slug in the can.

Hahaha I love that sound…. Is it just to the left or is it slightly lower and to the left? If it’s the second one you’re probably canting the gun slightly to the left…before making any changes to gun or scope id check that and my shooting technique. I wasn’t hitting anything last 75y until I really checked my technique.

I would say yes the gun was canted. Some of the angles back there are tough the get both bipods on the deck railing. I've never shot from a tripod before, don't have the 1st clue how to even mount it.

Hahaha same bro. It’s a learning experiences but you’ll get it. A level really helps

Can I use a camera tripod and just buy a mount? I'm still paying for the vacation 😩
Of course! There is a lot of ways to go. It's another rabbit hole. Hell, it's a warren at this point. Don't spend more than $50, you really don't need to. I will post a link to a thread to what I got. I looked a lot, I would still buy what I bought, and think that you have to spend more than twice what I spent to get almost as good.

I just got an Amazon tripod for like $55 and it’s worked great… do yourself a favor and get an arca mount and rail. I didn’t and it’s been added to the list of things I gotta sort out… once you start stretching out you’ll really appreciate a flat base to mount on and some kind of level.

Slugs are no joke bro. Especially when you find that good balance of penetration and expansion. My preference is no pass throughs but one of the funnest things about all this stuff is you get to choose.

Great shot.
I'm tuning for the yotes. I'd prefer no pass through, but even the pellets out of the crappy Daisy Winchester break barrel goes right through squirrels.

With these weight slugs, going over 900fps at less than 50yrds I don't see how you could tune it not to pass through. In the fall, when the leaves are off the trees, I'll be able to stretch it out to a hundred or so.

It just depends on the lead and the shape of the hollowpoint… with 30s and 31s going 950-960 I don’t pass through on anything until I’m less than about 40 yards… but you’re right less than that and it’s really hard not too. Haha I just love the way they completely lock up when the whole 60fpe gets dumped into them 🤷‍♂️

So, I've been wondering if I should figure out getting the gun to shoot a 34 to 36 grain slug in a dime and write down the settings. Then tune it down to shoot a 28-30 grain at 950'ish to have more fun with. More shots per charge and better suited for what has been around out back. I know the yotes are still in the area, as the neighbors across the street have seen them, once, and the community FB page has had some posts. But there hasn't been a "role call" out back or any other noises from them and I haven't seen one since March. The squirrel carcasses are being taken but I don't know if it's them or not.

The next squirrel I drop I'm going to put my game came on the carcass to verify what is taking them. Two of them disappeared during the day yesterday and I'm thinking it was the Hawks nested not too far away. The one from the pic above was there at dusk and gone this morning though.

Once I pay off some debts I'll be saving for a Zulus so by the fall I'll be ready for the yotes at night. In the meantime I need to figure out a mount for the tripod I have...

I just don't know what to look for or what is good vs trash. I'm guessing it would be best to see if I can remove the whole camera base from the top and find something that will mount in it's place. Would that be the best approach?

Considering that your gun is set up very close to mine I think your plan is good. Write down the settings and then try the lighter weight stuff. At less than 100y I promise that stuff will definitely down a coyote. Honestly I think it’ll do better. I get better stopping power from 60fpe of 31gr slug than 60fpe of 36gr. There’s a variety of factors of course but I believe the higher velocity makes the biggest difference.

Okay so I finally pulled the trigger and opened up the transfer port up to 4.4mm to match the intake sleeve. I’m at work so I haven’t chrono’d the gun yet but from just a couple dry fires it definitely sounds different. Sounds a lot more crisp. I’m very excited to see what the numbers look like…. I’ve decided to stop tuning constantly. The goal here is to shoot 32gr Franco slugs at 960fps.
