Question about a scope.

I bought a permit to use the Pa state game lands shooting range. I will be using my Barra 1100z when I get it back from Barra. The rifle range has a 25, 50 and 100 yard targets. I have and love the Hammers brand, 4-12x40 scope, I have it on 2 break barrels and was on my 1100z. The yardage markings on the front lense, the 10y mark is good for my basement range but If I go the the shooting range 25y target the yardage marking on my scope jumps from 20y to 30y with no 25y marking. do I just set it to half way between the 20 and 30 y markings ? I'm thinking I can and jus use the focus ring for a clear view.

You can do the same for 25 yards by setting it at 20 or 30, and adjusting the focus. Either way. Check em both. See which looks better to you. That's what ultimately counts.

Yeah like @JimT66 said. The build quality may be off and 25Y is actually 20 or 30Y marked on your scope....or worse. What I always do is set out your target at a known distance. Set parralax to min and while looking through the scope (no peaking at the parralax wheel!) dial it to perfection to your eye. Then get off the scope and look at the knob setting. Trust your eyes first and your scopes markings second. I have done this to all my scopes and happy to report even the 2 Hawkes are spot on @ the distances I shoot

I end up adjusting until it looks good, which often doesn't line up with the markings of the bell.

Thank you for that info. So basically those markings are just a general guide, correct ? Just for the heck of it at my 10 yard range, I set the scope for 20y but ran out of focus the make the target clear.

Yes, any distance markings on riflescopes should be treated as purely advisory - until proven otherwise by testing.

Ok, thank you. After your initial answer, I was thinking it was a general guide.

As a reminder, make sure that you set your diopter before you do anything else. All adjustments will be off if your not properly set to begin with.

Yes, I did know about adjusting the diopter. But now a question: Since So far I only shoot in mt 10Y basement range, When I start shooting at the state game land shooting range and set the scope for say 20Y, will the diopter change?

No, the diopter is adjusted so that your eye sees the reticle clearly, it has nothing to do with image clarity. A quick Google search will bring up a scope manufacturers explanation. Many folks do it wrong. Anyway, the adjustable objective (whether side, or front focus) is the only thing that changes with yardage. Unless your eye changes, the diopter focus will remain the same.

Fire away with the questions, we're here to help! I shoot with my brother a fair amount and we both hate each other's scopes. The truth is they are all fine but our eyes see differently! I get the eye focus just right and it's cloudy for him and vise versa. We don't shoot each other's guns much for this reason. But it's a great way to try something else without buying it.

I don't know any air gunners in my area.I went to the Pa.state shooting range on sunday just to get feel for the layout. I asked the one gut about the 3 target yardages, he verified 25, 50 and 100 yard. When I told him I would only be using the range for air rifles, he seemed surprised. I thought to my self, well in Pa. air rifles are legal for hunting so it makes perfect sense to practice at a range.
P.S. I forgot how loud firearms were. LOL I remembered real quick. LOL I need to pick up a good pair of hearing muffs.
