Here in So. California we have lots of Gambel's Quail. A few weeks ago as a covey of them ran across our shooting range, I patiently waited as they scampered through. One of the foolish critters decided to perch right on the wrought iron frame of my paper target at 25 yards. It sat there and coo-cooed at me as if there wasn't a rifle in sight. I waited a few moments, and then waited some more. I finally decided to start shooting at my target, thinking that this little fella would quickly flutter away, but no, there he sat! "I'm not moving, why should I move?" I just kept firing away, until he finally decided to catch up with his buddies. One would think that he'd have more situational awareness than that, but not this one. Orv.

Cleaning quail is just not worth it for the very little meat available. In the past I've tried and found that while their dark meat is delicious, it takes about 4 birds to satisfy two diners. The cleaning project is tedious as well, at least for my inexperienced hands. Around here, the quail aren't gun shy any time of the year. Come on done to our High Desert and we'll do sme shooting. But hey . . . hunting just isn't my thing. Orv.

Sweet? Ever had one as a pet? Tormenting pot and pan clattering little beasties are as bad or worse than anybody's little crumb snatching ankle biter you have ever dealt with! But, yeah, they can be a little sweet, and a better girl magnet a single man could ever hope to have!

Becoming a regular in the morning. Must think it has a job here.

I have every sort of large and small game walk right in front, or behind my target backstop. Tree squirrels, ground squirrels, cottontails, birds, deer and elk. I've never shot a single animal while sitting at my shooting bench. My wife and I enjoy seeing all the wildlife around our house and property. We feed the Western Grey squirrels (Silvergreys) all during the snow months.

Only exception to this would be that if a coyote made the mistake of walking into my sight while sitting at the bench he would have to be carried off the property! And, if we had Starlings here (we don't) I would setup a suet block feeder and shoot the piss out of Starlings!

Of course this all changes when I walk off our place with my rifle, shooting sticks and pack!

it is so nice to see the animals in the natural habitat, as hunters and shooters it is our responsibility to protect and harvest animals for their own preservation
