Umarex USA has launched TWO CO2-powered versions of the same pistol. The Glock 17 Gen5 MOS is available in both “full blowback” and “half blowback” models.

Umarex USA explains that the “half blowback” and “full blowback” concept exists in the airsoft world. It provides the customer with a choice of price point and functionality for what looks to be the same firearms replica.

As Hard Air Magazine has demonstrated in this analysis, there can be a significant difference in performance between blowback and non-blowback CO2-powered air pistols. Typically, non blowback pistols have a higher Muzzle Velocity, higher shot count and are more accurate.

This is because there’s only a certain (relatively fixed) amount of power in one 12 Gram CO2 cartridge. As it takes power to provide a powerful blowback recoil effect, that power cannot be used to power the shots.

HAM would expect the “half blowback” version to give results somewhere between “full blowback” and an (in this case, non-existent) “non-blowback” models.

And, indeed, that’s what we see from the specs. The half blowback model gains 70 FPS and an increase of 8% in the shot count, compared to the full blowback gun.

At any event, both versions are outstandingly-detailed and realistic replicas of the Glock 17 Gen5 MOS firearm!

Both versions are capable of being used with the Umarex 8 RDS Red Dot Sight.This is increasingly becoming a feature of CO2-powered replica pistols.

However, the full blowback version includes the necessary optics mounting plates. With the half blowback model, these need to be purchased separately for an additional charge.
