In relation to a .22 Barra 250Z.

What are the pro & cons of using a much stronger hammer spring alone vs. a less strong spring and a weight?

That can be tough to answer. It is math the whole mass thing vs velocity stuff. I think of it like this.

The plenum has a certain amount of pressure in it.
These is a proper that seals the path to the barrels
These is a spring holding the poppet in place.
You need X amount of force to open that poppet
The more force the more it opens and more air gets to the barrel.

More pressure on the reg helps keep the valve closed. Many times more reg can reduce air use by keeping the valve closed more. So if the reg pressure is high you need more mass to open the valve. At low pressures you can use speed/velocity to open the valve quickly.

That is way over simplified but hope it makes sense.

This is complicated. Bob Sterne had a lot to say about this over the years and his threads are still probably over at GTA. What I basically got out of it was that a stronger spring beats adding weight. A lot of people don't agree, but through a lot of testing with my Gen 1 Gauntlet, I came to the same conclusion.

It depends on a lot of things. Like, how long your barrel is, what pressure you run at, how heavy a round that you are shooting, how your gun is ported, ...the list goes on and on. Testing is the only way you're really going to know. Most people won't test both sides of it, they are in one camp and strive to make it work. I do this myself now because of all the testing that I did on my own and it would take quite a presentation to change my mind on it at this point. If your gun's porting isn't opitimal, weight can give you more dwell though you might be less effecient or have a longer lock time as a result. Optimally you want your valve closed when your projectile is about two thirds down the barrel. You can do this by burping out a squirt of really high pressure air limiting dwell with a really fast light hit, or you can hit slower heavier with more dwell. The 250z has a long enough barrel that you can do either, which one works better probably just comes down to which one you try harder to make work. There are a lot of paths to the same destination. I like lighter, faster, higher pressure, because I believe it is more consistent and gets the momentum of the projectile happening faster.

A thread like this really use to open up a can of worms in days past! There is not a lot of that anymore, too bad really.
