Spring/Piston SLAVIA 630 REBUILD/PARTS HUNTING!!

All together again! The old spring basically fell out, the new spring I put back end into my vise and pushed the action into it as hard as I could and threaded it home. Not sure what was going on but the first few shots were definitely dieseling. Put some supplied grease on spring, and rws chamber oil and a dab of silicone grease onto piston seal end. Got some smoke and bad smells with the light crosman 7.9s. Man does it sound better, twang/buzz is 100% gone, crisp almost like my TX! Open sights are back on! Shot a friend's gun last weekend and I forgot how fun open sights are close range. I had issues with getting windage right (20 some odd years ago!?) so opted for the cheap scope back then. Will definitely post some groups and speeds once it's settled!

Well the showdown was as I feared. Firstly the open sights were waaaaay off, didn't know where I was hitting at first...eventually figured it out and at max elevation and windage the best I could do was with the JSB RS pellets. Will be grinding my rear sight down for more windage adj. Not a TX worthy group but it also has a nice 12× scope to help with that.... If this doesn't work I'm gonna get a small springer scope and leave it at that. Let down #2...with that beefier, longer spring it only gained 30/40 FPS and I was hoping for 80/100 which would put it at 600ish fps. But success with the sound and feel! It is a nice thunk now no cheap twwaanngg sound. All at 20Y today.

Curse you Czech flathead screws!!!! Lol this bolt was super bent, and I reinstalled it anyways...regrets!! Head stripped as i tightened it home and it will be fun to get out....gonna get some proper hex head harware. Gun was NOT loving the high power spring from Vortek so I got 2 new springs to try from D&L. I had shot probably 100 pellets through it till it locked up and got gritty, even the trigger! Ended up going with the shortest spring (#6) as the #8 wasn't finished at all, and was too tight in the piston assembly. It also was painted or coated in something?....I will polish/grind it and try it later. The original cdn spec spring is the second shortest. The quest for 600+fps with 7.9 crosmans continues! I doubt the #6 will even be close, its thicker wire but shorter overall....I will keep updating!

I guess a positive fit hollow ground screw driver pays off .. ( I grind my own from common tapered screwdrivers I got )

Then reusing a damaged fasteners don't help.

I definitely will be grinding a screwdriver bit down...got a nut n bolt supply right by my work thankfully. The #8 spring is the dull second largest and should work a treat...as long as I can get it in the back of piston, I got it in with some violence lol, but not ideal. I'd guess some play is better? I'm not an expert!! Also I have a new piston seal but check out what happened to the original! Before and after Vortek spring. Working fine it seems but a chunk came off the face?! I know some shots did diesel after the rebuild....hmm

Well well! The shortest spring (#6) beats out the Beefy waaaay too powerful and difficult to install Vortek (550fps av) and the longer but lighter factory spring (515fps av)! Impressed, but not there yet...lets hear it for the #8! Longer doesn't always translate into more power....Also it's super pleasant to shoot again.

When I cut and grind a blade it's more like the precision ground look i used a die grinder and a good usa sharp file to produce the tip

use a small ball been hammer and file to repair the screw head and get a nice fitting screw driver with can be made to properly fit using a file, all very common shop practice : )

Wow shots fired lol. Yeah it's just getting it back out is the challenge. Once it's out it's trash. If you know the old Slav guns, it's a definite upgrade to swap out the hardware for hex stuff. Esp since I seem to be working on this gun so much now

Probably easy to find in Canada being metric then I could find one here as a direct fit screw for that ..lol

no serious look it up that's how you would repair old screw for reuse it is the common way of doing it
you peen the screw head then re cut the slot or I would guess file it and clean it up

Finally got to work on the Slavia again. The #8 spring from D&L does not fit well so I chopped 2 coils off the way too long Vortek spring....I paid plenty for it and it fit well, minus being too long overall so it made the most sense. Extracted the flathead screws and got some nice proper allen head bolts (M5x80 bolts and 35-40mm long) installed.
Anyone who is leary about cutting a spring down themselves I will say this....very easy to do!
Step 1: Figure out length you want and cut 1 coil or so above that measurement.
Step 2: Cut carefully with a grinder.
Step 3: Heat the end (don't go crazy but it should be just getting red) and compress the spring end flat.
Step 4: grind & polish. That's literally it!
I ran 5 pellets through it and the gun sounds great again with no binding or gritiness. Definitely diesels still. I will try to get chrono numbers out soon

Well, i made it 10 minutes outside slinging .177 pellets and got some baselines (-3c and windy!)....600fps average with the crosmans continue to elude me. First shot did not send to my phone but it hit 644fps. Off my prochrono:
