Pellets testing. Gel and distance.

I am 55, but I only got into airguns 4 months ago. All because of the pest birds. I solved this problem, but the interest in airguns took root. I found your wonderful site, and read with interest many tests of rifles and pellets. But I can not see from what distance the ballistic gel is fired in the reviews of pellets. What is the distance? I would like to know. This is the main reason for my message. Well, the second reason. Is the penetration of the pellet so important? According to my modest observations and modest experience, when shooting from a rifle with a power of 10-12 joules, and using pellets of 0.5-0.65 grams, at a distance of up to 50 meters, probably, and up to 30 meters guaranteed, the target is hit by any pellet regardless of shape. I used both Spitzkugel (.177) and Hornet, and different types of Baracuda (all brands H&N) - and somehow did not find a significant difference. I just made about 200 hits in about 10 days - and that's it, there were fewer of them. Is it so important, whether the bullet penetrated 40 mm or 60 mm, I have the impression that it is not very important.

What is this joules, grams, mm, and meters nonsense? Jk...welcome to Ham, Bird pesting is ma thing! One of the main reasons I shoot Air. Your questions leave alot of questions....
What country are you in?
what air rifle are you shooting?
how big are the birds your after?
Do you need a safe backstop (ie a high expansion option vs penetration)?
I probably shot 20birds last Saturday (80% starlings) as they gorged on mulberries. I was using barracuda Hunters, Jsb Hades, Patriot slugs, and hornets. The most important thing will be accuracy, then expansion (quick death) with penetration being a very distant 3rd. Personally, I prefer the high expansion and high speed on anything with feathers....the thwack of the hit often being louder than the air rifle....and I shoot with zero silencing devices! Going after fur bearing critters (say gophers or racoons) is where penetration becomes more important. Of the 20ish birds i hit only 1 was wounded (cat finished it off) Everything else was DRT.
