Now There's A New Barra AR Breakbarrel Air Rifle

Now there’s a new Barra AR breakbarrel air rifle. Hot on the heels of the Barra 270z PCP air rifle, this new AR model is a breakbarrel, spring/piston airgun.

Available in .177 and .22 calibers, the Barra AR is a substantial-feeling, Turkish-manufactured lookalike of the semi-automatic firearm. It weighs 6 Lbs 8 Oz and is 40 1/4-Inches long with the adjustable buttstock extended.

As befitting the intended market, much is made of the muzzle velocity specification. It’s up to a claimed 1,200 FPS in .177 and 900 FPS in .22 caliber.

It’s also extremely simple. Just break the barrel, load a pellet, set the safety to off and pull the trigger to fire.

The “clamshell”-like construction includes molded replications of all the firearm’s controls and features, although none of them are operational, of course. Even the safety is located within the trigger guard, rather than using the traditional AR-type selector lever.

While this is a simple air rifle, there’s versatility in the sighting systems. Barra’s AR has a top carry handle with built-in rear sight including windage and elevation capability.

This carry handle is removable – doing so reveals a flat-top Picatinny rail. This allows a BUIS-type rear sight to be mounted if desired, while the short Picatinny rail below the supplied front sight allows a front BUIS front sight to be installed instead.

Another sighting option is to mount a red dot sight or riflescope. Although – given the recoil characteristics of all spring/piston air rifles – you should ensure that any optic is proof against springer recoil damage. The Leapers UTG “True Strength” platform is ideal for this, of course, as shown by the UTG red dot sight we have mounted here.

Another benefit of the Barra AR is that it is fitted with sling swivels. These can be used to carry the gun over the shoulder for field use. That’s useful given that Barra is positioning thier AR as a hunting tool. But there is one design feature to be aware of…

The rear sling swivel accepts a standard, 1-Inch wide, AR-type sling.

However the front sling swivel accepts only a narrower fitting, AK-like loop, width. Just be sure to understand that before buying a sling.

Also included with the gun is a “clamp-on” synthetic bipod. This is easily removed for cocking, or when carrying, and some owners may find this another beneficial feature of the model.

The Barra AR is available directly from the Barra website. The price is $199.99, including the manufacturer’s 12-month warranty.

Thank you for that Info. I asked Barra just yesterday and they couldn’t tell me! Their reply:
Thank you for your patience while I checked with my team. Unfortunately, we do not have confirmed weight specifications available for the new AR and AK break-barrel rifles at this time.

I can confirm that the outer shell is made of polymer, while the barrel and internal structure are steel. A fare weight to estimate would be around 8-10lbs.

I apologize that I couldn’t provide the exact weights, but I appreciate your interest in our products!

While I appreciate the person trying, I think they should have been able to weigh it. Coming in under 7 lbs is good. What isn’t is 8 to 10 lbs!
Looking forward to the report on the AK too. I like the open sight type on it.

As an advocate of spring powered air rifles, indeed all air powered guns & rifles, I have a concern that the appearance of this "AR" styled gun will easily be mistaken for appearing like an AR semiautomatic weapon. Sure looks like it to me! I fear that this plastic airgun will nudge the anti 2nd amendment people closer and closer to legislation taking away my/our airguns. Is my first impression wrong? Will mandated registration come next? How about having my/our airguns sent only to Federally Licensed Agents? I love my guns and I don’t want politicians to take them away for a mistaken "look alike" identity. We've lost the day when we could walk into the neighborhood sporting goods store and walk out with our new pistol or rifle. Let's not give the politicians any more ammunition. Orv.

Hopefully not. But they hate Glocks so much I believe one state is banning them. We have a whole line of C02 Glocks that look like the real deal. I do understand what you are saying. Not the best timing. Myself I think it’s more the big bores with firearm energy that will hurt us when some sicko uses one to do harm on innocent people. Hope I am wrong. I like them but as we keep getting more powerful guns (some with multiple shot capabilities) the lines between firearm and airgun is just the power plant. This push won’t go away anytime soon. We just have to keep pushing back.

I sent this link to Barra (it was about the weight of the gun). Their reply:
Thank you for sharing that information! You're correct, and I actually received confirmation from my team this morning that the weight for the AK is 6.82 pounds, the AR is 6.93 pounds.

I appreciate you taking the time to research this and bring it to our attention. We will make sure our product listing is updated with the correct specifications.

Thank you again for your patience and for helping us improve our product information!

So HAM is a winner for everyone! Thanks again for this site/blog/tests and so on. Love it!
