New Offering: The FX Pocket Chronograph Pro

Took the pics with my phone with the crono on my knee held there by a pillow. Its a very nice unit that anyone thats interested in bc would like to have. For example i just checked 13.4 aea against 13.4 mrds. The mrds had a .01 higher bc. Cost 10 shots of each in about 10 min in my indoor range. 10m

FX changed the form factor to compete with the Garmin Xero and Athlon Rangecraft. They also lowered their price to around $500 which is more competitive with the Garmin unit. Plus there appear to be features on this unit that the Garmin and Athlon do not posses, like the ability to calculate BC. I’m not sure how this unit accomplishes that, but I think it’s worth exploring if that’s important to you. Here’s a curious thing, it can track velocities up to 4500 fps, but only calculates BC of projectiles traveling up 1280 fps. I wonder why FX limited this unit to only calculating BC of projectiles topping out around 1280 fps.


I was wondering why they’d discontinued the FX True Ballistics Chronograph. Sucks to be the guy who is stuck with a True Ballistics unit if these units perform similarly and FX doesn’t continue support and firmware upgrades.

I'm no expert but I think the answer to your question - about why the FX can track muzzle velocity to 4500 fps but can only instantly calculate BC under 1280fps - is because the size of the device limits its radar range. Calculating velocity at the muzzle (whether it's 1280 or 4500fps) is comparatively easy, as the projectile's radar return is near the muzzle. The further away the projectile velocity is being measured, the weaker the radar return and therefore, the larger the antenna needs to be to accurately capture the radar data. That's why the FX True Ballistics Chronograph and the original LabRadar are large: they need space for a large antenna to capture accurate radar data downrange. As a comparison, the new LabRadar is pocket-sized and can only capture velocity data out to about 30yd because of its form factor. So FX must have decided that the downrange radar signal data isn't accurate enough for fast projectiles because they haven't slowed down enough before they're out of the device's short radar range. This issue is of course mitigated by placing the chronograph downrange where it can capture additional velocity data close to the device.
