In my quest for finding the balance of lightweight, compact, a Christmas tree reticle (not too cluttered), better glass, and good light transmission in low light came a cross some Hawke scopes. I bought a couple of Sidewinders because I really enjoyed the first one. As I researched other scopes, the Frontier crossed my radar. What I noticed is that most of the Frontier scopes had a minimum focus of 15 yards. I really prefer a 10 yard minimum focus point for hunting because I come across animals pretty close to me frequently enough to warrant this criteria.

I thought I’d made a break through when I found the Hawke Frontier 30 FFP 3-15x50 which weighs in at 22.2 oz and is 13.2” long. I like the looks of the Mil Pro reticle, it is illuminated, has 10 yard minimum focus, and H7 glass which is supposed to be Hawke’s best. YES!!! Or so I thought. I went to place my order and order the wrong scope. I called to cancel my order and the owner asked me, “What was it that you were looking for?” I get it, he want the money and wants a happy customer. No harm, no foul. I explained that I am trying to order the Hawke Frontier FFP 3-15x50 model #18520 and mistaking order the wrong scope. He said he’d call me later in the day to see what he could do for me. So he canceled my order and called back….with bad news. He told me that Hawke stopped making this scope and he needs to remove it from his site. No wonder it was not available via Hawke’s site. I thought I’d found a winner. I ended up trying another scope. Just a heads up in case someone else is looking for one of these Frontiers. I wish the folks at Hawke knew that the specs listed for this scope are desirable to air gunners.

Here’s a link to the scope in the title.

I wonder if Hawke is getting rid of all their 10Y min focus 'firearm' scopes (Frontier & Sidewinder) then? Seeing as they have the dedicated Airmax line geared towards airgunners. Obviously any scope could work on any gun to a point but I too definitely like a 10Y min, on all my Airguns. My trusty 3x9 vantage has a 10Y min parralax as well. For the specs and price your after I might recommend the Athlon 4x16x44 Midas Tac FFP....Absolute beauty.

@Danman The Sidewinders with 10 yard parallax are still around. Model #17450 Sidewinder 30 FFP 4-16x50 FFP Half Mil
Rimfire .22 guys shoot about the same range(s) as airgunners. There’s still a market as far as I can tell. It’s FFP scopes I like. I don’t worry about the SFPs.

Hawke has introduced several new Frontier models in the past couple of years. This includes 4 models of the Frontier 34mm FFP (3-18x50 and 5-30x56, 2 with MOA and 2 with MIL Pro). Last year, we introduced the Frontier 30 FFP MOA Hunter in both 4-20x50 and 5-25x56. Through this transition, we have discontinued some lower volume models. The 18520 Frontier 30 FFP 3-15x50 is one of them. It’s a great scope, but these new models along with the existing 18530 4-20x50 FFP Mil Pro are far more popular. All 12 models of the Sidewinder have a close parallax of 10x. So, you might consider the 17450 4-16x50 FFP Half Mil. Currently in the Frontier line, the 18421 2.5-15x50 is the only model with 10x (the others are 15x or hunting models with fixed parallax), however the 18421 is SFP. The Frontier 18520 was only recently discontinued and still available with some of our dealers, including Pyramyd Air and still includes Hawke’s No-Fault Lifetime Warranty. I hope this helps. @HawkeUSA Thanks for the excellent, detailed answer!

@HawkeUSA Thanks for the response. I have some of those Sidewinders. I really like them. The Frontier is what I am interested in now. I must have over looked that 2.5-15x50 if it’s an FFP. I’ll look into model #18421 when I have time. Although I feel like I have already. Thanks again.

@HawkeUSA I looked at the 18421 and I thought that model number looked familiar. It does because it’s a SFP scope that I’ve seen, ordered, and returned. I am only interested in first focal plane scopes with a minimum parallax of 10 yards. I’d like a Frontier scope with 2.5/3-15 magnification range and I haven’t found any. I thought I’d covered my bases in my initial post. Anyhow thanks for reading my gripe. Hopefully someone took note of the fact that someone still has interest in those specs. I can’t speak for others, but for my purposes I like Hawke glass and warranty. I would have like to have tried a top-of-the-line Hawke, but I will wait and see if I can find an old used model #18520.

Hi again. Just to be sure you noticed it in my response, Pyramyd Air has the 18520 in stock. I hope that helps. Thanks.
