Yes, there’s lots of Weihrauch news this month! Now we can tell you that the new HW30 Junior air rifle is becoming available at Airguns of Arizona.
Well, actually a little bird told us that an initial batch of this new youth air rifle was delivered recently. But they sold out immediately! So AoA has more on order from the factory and you can reserve yours with a $25.00 deposit.
Let’s be clear. This is a very unusual air rifle! Sure, it’s small and light. It’s easy to cock and shoot. Plus it’s suitable for youth shooters who may find a larger air rifle un-managable.
But the real innovation here is that this is a high quality starter air rifle. Unlike most other youth airguns, it’s not a cheap “throwaway” product. In fact it’s a sophisticated German-manufactured airgun that’s built with high quality for a lifetime of use.
The Junior is a “real” high quality airgun, just smaller.
Sure, it costs a lot more than the more traditional starter airguns. Like up to 10 X more! However a little investigation reveals why that should be the case. No corners were cut in the manufacture of this air rifle…
- The HW30 Junior has all solid wood and precision-machined steel construction. Not molded plastic or stamped “pot metal”. This is quality you can see and feel.
- It’s equipped with the superb Weihrauch Rekord 2-stage trigger – a great way to learn about trigger control. There’s an automatic safety too, of course.
- The barrel is rifled, crowned and finished just like that of all the company’s other airguns. The result is outstanding accuracy potential. That allows the new shooter to really observe how his or her shooting is developing. The Junior will be a great tool to indicate and reward the shooter’s developing accuracy skills.
- Precision-adjustable open sights are included, but a scope can be mounted, if desired.
- The cocking action – indeed everything about the Junior – is smooth and precise. It inspires confidence in a new shooter.
As its name implies, the Junior is a scaled-down version of the long-running HW30 model. However some significant design changes that have been incorporated, it’s not just a HW30S in a shorter stock.
So – compared to the HW30S – overall weight is down from 6 Lbs 8 Oz to 5 Lbs 6 Oz. The barrel is shortened from 15.5 to 13.4 Inches. Power is down from around 6 Ft/Lbs to under 4 Ft/Lbs. The length of pull is just 12.5 Inches. These are all good things for the youth shooter.
The caliber is .177 only.
But there is one caveat about the Weihrauch HW30 Junior. For anyone lucky enough to have one as his or her first air rifle, there will be no going back. They will understand what it is to use – and love – a quality product and find any lesser airguns disappointing.
I’ll take a guess that the HW30 Junior will be the “gateway drug” to a lifetime of Weihrauch air rifle ownership!
