So, bipods!

First it’s worth mentioning that the majority of what I write is intended to be informative, not as criticism. But don’t think that I will try to polish junk because I can assure you that WILL NOT be the case!

I have managed to gather up a few bipods while searching for the perfect one. I’m not sure I will ever get there, LOL

The bipods I have are an Accu-Tac BR 4, a Magpul bipod, an older Leapers UTG Pro TBNR and a new Leapers UTG Goliath. So it’s not the broadest of selections, but it is what I have on hand so I can talk about them from experience.

I will mention a couple more bipods that are not included in this article. That’s because they would only receive a dishonorable mention!

These are a couple of cheapies. They felt very poor, were not well made and could not be adjusted to fit the Picatinny rails on any of my guns. After shimming one in an attempt to made it work I said enough: it’s not happening!

Actually I did not purchase these cheapies. They are a friend’s. He is always going to get the get the cheapest whereas I tend to try to get the best I can afford. But I WILL shop for a bargain…

Four Favorite Air Rifle Bipods: Accu-Tac BR 4​

This is probably – of what I have have the good fortune to see – the best, hands down best made bipod! It is solid, with an extremely high level of build quality. This is the bipod yardstick from what I can tell. Like I say this is based on what I have seen.

So nothing is perfect – at least not to everyone – and although I do love the Accu-Tac, some things need to be looked at.

It takes a firm hand to move the leg position on this, so much so my wife isn’t able to easily move the legs, and as a result she doesn’t like it. So be warned it does take some effort.

I don’t think its horrible and for most of us it will be a non-issue. Could it be a little easier? Well I’m not sure as to my thoughts you don’t want it flopping in the wind so I really am on the fence. Just be warned it does take some effort. So from one to ten I will say its a seven.

The lock for the Pic rail attachment took a bit of fiddling-with to get just right for my gun (I will leave the how-to to the directions) as it will for about everyone I suspect. But it was a non-issue. The lever is robust and very nice. I will give this a nine only because I am sure there improvement, so I will save the ten.

The leg height adjustment is very nice very well made, very solid. The operation is very smoothly, very simple and again I am going to go with a nine.

The lock-up for leveling works very well, again very smooth. I like the way the handle is made and adjusted as for position. I am going to give the feature a seven but only because I am sure it could be improved upon.

It has a little heft but in my humble view not bad at all. It comes in at 1 Lbs 3.8 Oz.

Four Favorite Air Rifle Bipods: Leapers UTG Pro TBNR​

I like this bipod. I feel the UTG bipods don’t get the love they should. This is a nice bipod.

However I am not in love with the leg position adjustment. It works and it takes two hands to use but I will warn you, if you have larger hands it might pose some level of “grrr”.

There is a small button that has to be depressed so you can unlock the mechanism to move the leg. This is not a major pain for me, it works well and I am sure as designed but I can see it being a royal pain for some. I will give this a seven.

The Pic rail clamp is the type needing a tool to lock it down. But it works. I like the quick release because I don’t leave bipods on any of my guns. They just don’t live there!

I use them setting at the bench punching paper or killing cans but I also hunt with my guns and I don’t want the extra weight while carting a gun through the woods. I just don’t!

I am giving this an eight because it does what it should, but I wish it was a quick release. So an eight.

The leg height is adjusted by loosening this nut (just a twist). Turn the leg and pull it out, turn the leg back and tighten the nut.

This works well locks up great. It’s not as convenient or as easy as it could be but I can do it one-handed. It takes a level of co-ordination and to be honest two hands are better. I am only going hand out a seven and I am on the fence with that. But it will get a seven.

The leveling mechanism is not bad. It works well and locks down well enough but I do feel it could be a bit better as it takes a little “umph” to lock it down. But the lever is robust and you can put it to it. I am giving this feature an eight.

The weight comes in at 1 Lbs 2.5 Oz. Not bad.

We will get to the UTG Goliath last mostly because is a wider, different style of bipod. Now I want to look at the Magpul bipod.

This is another bipod I do like. It’s light, solid and just works. It is a budget-friendly bipod. It won’t break the bank.

I like the set-up for moving the leg. Push the button and it works! It is easy to use, locks up very nicely, very smooth. I am giving this an eight.

The pic rail is a clamp and requires a tool as mentioned before. Not bad, but not what I would prefer. So like before, I am giving this an eight because it does what it should but I do wish it was a quick release. So an eight.

The leg height is simple. Push a button and slide it where you want it, smooth very nice. I will offer up an eight for this function. I like it.

So for leveling it’s a good design. But it takes a bit more effort then I would like to see. You tighten the knob to lock it down and it takes some level more effort then I would prefer. Not horrible, but not great so for this I give it a seven.

Weight 11.7 Oz. Nice.

I want to add that for me I think this is a really good bang for buck. I like this bipod.

Now to the new UTG Goliath…

This is a beast and I do love, love, love it!!! Thank you UTG for getting this product to market for all of us.

To adjust the leg position adjustment, push the button to set it. It’s easy and works well. Not as smooth as some, but don’t take that to mean its not smooth enough because it is. I have to give it eight and say again that I like it.

The Pic rail attachment set-up is a quick release so I like that. It is very nicely made. There is a small latch to push forward to unlock the lever and from there its all easy, easy.

I would like to have seen a slightly larger lever but this is more then adequate. I am giving this a seven.

The leg height adjustment is very nice smooth and easy to use I would say its an improvement on the UTG Pro. You use a thumb screw to depress the button/frame just behind it and make your adjustment.

Although this is very smooth and work very nicely it does still require two hands and for that I am only going to give it a seven.

Leveling is very nice and smooth large lever works very nice the same applies to the swing I like this and how it works I am given an eight to this.

Weigh 1 lbs 8.3 oz

I would like to add that I like this UTG Goliath bipod, a lot!

My first bipod that I ever bought was the Magpul. I now have two of them. They are a pretty nice “basic” bipod and have worked well for me on a farm pesting. The lack of excessive weight is definitely a plus. I too have an Accu-Tac. The one I have is the FC-4 G2 which I bought purposely for my bench rest set up. Pricey but so solid. There’s also a UTG in my collection that was purchased for my M357 Bulldog. It’s there over the barrel style. I believe it has mostly the same type of features as the Goliath. I made that purchase instead of the other brand that is similar only costs a heck of a lot more. I’m very very very happy with the UTG.

if I could only keep one it would be for bench work and as such it would be the Leapers UTG Goliath I like the wide stance and its and solid bipod.
if for a carry gun the Magpul it is solid and light.
but since I dont leave one on a gun the Leapers UTG Goliath still wins out.

Excellent review, only one i would have liked to see reviewed as well is the Mdt ground pod. I have only the Accutac (SR5) and aside from being a bit long, it exceeds all expectations. Pinched my finger good messing with it the first week and learned exactly how NOT to adjust the legs!

Your UTG reminds me of the UTG Recon, but yours looks like it was an earlier iteration. I thought the Recon was a decent bang-for-your-buck bipod. Those Accu-Tacs are just solid, solid, solid!. Have you any experience with Atlas bipods?

I bought a used rifle and it came with a bipod. Marked as an Atlas BT10 V8. I had my suspicions and took some pictures and posted them. Finally figured it out to be a chinese knockoff. But the only way to tell was the aluminum cam for the leg angle was pressed rather than machined.

Some of the knockoff are very difficult to identify now. I can normally spot the tell but it took someone with an actual Atlas BT10 to figure it out.

But it went in the box with my other bipods. I shoot off my tripod these days.

I dont have a lot of differant gun I am more of the EVOL guy LOL so for me thats where I will be using it.
I know Kevin had some issue with It on the Ghost but I spoke with him and he said it was the Ghost not the Goliath he swapped the lower and was good.
I am not one for haveing the bipod for hunting although I could see the potential
I would like to try a Atlas in the futer as well as some others but I cant adress the topic at this point.

I bought a TBNR knowing its weaknesses and love it except…. The 45 deg droop is apparently a known and tolerated (somewhat) problem. Removed the tensioning lever and saw what appears to be the ball. What happens if you use a longer screw. Seems like more torque could be added. Do you know what the ball is made of? Let me explain, I only shoot off the bench and I don’t care if it tilts or swivels. I don’t care about the warranty either - bought from amazon warehouse in mint condition. What do i have to lose if I torque it down, maybe even drill a small guide hole in the ball for the screw to seat better. Thanks.

Contacted UTG and a very knowledgeable rep suggested something less drastic. Be moving the tension lever to a new position after max tightening, it will no longer hit the physical stop. Even used a short piece of copper tubing to add more torque- not as strong as I used to be. I do the same before each use to make sure. Problem solved.

Great thread. I purchased an Accu-Tac F4 G2 based upon several recommendations from fellow hamsters on here, the icing on the cake was the 25% military discount that Accu-Tac provided. I pretty much much only shoot from a table now. I was getting tired of switching the tripod between my Air rifles and decide I would purchase a UTG Goliath as they offer a 35% military discount. Then I decided that I’ve been spending too much and would just continue swapping the Accu-Tac between rifles. then Accu-Tac sent me a 50% off coupon. I decided to go with the FC5 G2 as I usually have to extend the kegs for the Sonoran. I was planning to write a comparison between the Accu-Tac and the Goliath, but half off was just too much if a hook. I really like the Accu-Tac products. My only issue with them is the same issue @pan60 mentioned: I find moving the legs from the forward to vertical positions a little stiff for me. But I wouldn’t want to trade off stability to change it.

Their military discount is 25% for military and law enforcement. They don’t specify active or retired etc. I’m retired and they gave it to me. That was on my first purchase. I suspect that they have an aggressive marketing team as I mentioned on this forum that I was considering purchasing the UTG Goliath as they have a 35% military discount. Going through my emails a day or two later I found an email with a 35% discount code from Accu-Tac. I didn’t use it. A few weeks later I signed into my Accu-Tac account and placed a bipod in my cart and left it there. Then I received an email from Accu-Tac with a 50% off coupon and I pulled the trigger on the
FC5 G2 for $260. On July 3rd they sent me a 40% off coupon that expired on the 6th.
