Shooting a Stoeger XM1 Ranger and picked up two boxes (sleeves?) of .22 caliber 22 grain fx hybrids. Excited to try them this evening but all I have is a 10 meter range at the minute. They stacked 5 pellets into one hole. Hopefully this is a good omen for longer ranges.

Now, I know slugs need to be pushed fast and I haven’t had a chance to chrony them yet but I’m currently shooting 16 grain FX diabolos at 874fps. 22 grain slugs probably around low 800s…maybe?

Problem is, I shot 3 of them into modelling clay and none of them expanded.

I would have thought ~800fps would be enough to cause expansion.

Any tips or ideas very much appreciated!

Regards,

Jack

If your pushing a 16gr pellet 874 a .22gr slug will be going around, or just less than 800fps my guess. My S510 shoots 18.13gr pellets 880fps and 23gr slugs about 820 if I recall (all my chrono data deleted when I got a new phone last year 😮‍💨) The heaviest grain slugs it shoots decently well are 23gr. I just got the FX hybrids slugs myself, and they are beautiful, definitely a bit on the harder side, with a massive H.P. They do have a serious amount of lead bits attached or floating loosely in the package though. Heres the lead bits after cleaning just 10 of em, have never cleaned my ammo till now. I will get back to you, on this chat how these expand in water jugs! Will shoot em outta the S510 and Ghost. Because of the big H.P. they are very tall for their weight. Heres the Hybrid slug between a 21 and 23 gr.

Update - I got the slugs to expand reliably. I took a .308 Hornady SST bullet and stuck it into the cavity. It seems the lip of the hollow point was curling inwards rather than the cavity getting filled and expanding outwards. Shoot the same at my 10 meter range but will update with longer distances

Jacko , as good as the "Cudas" expand, I wish ANY of my guns ,regardless of caliber would shoot them accurately
beyond 25-30yrds! They work fine for close rats & sparrows but lose it at 40-50 mark. Just a few days ago I tested the .25 Ranger at 53 yards. The swingers(2.5") rarely took hits ! I went back to the Hades which nailed center mass repeatedly. I have never compared either at close range for expansion. I haven't dabbled w/ slugs in the .25's yet.

Ok got 60 of the 100 FX slugs cleaned....started getting a sore back and going cross eyed😂....calling it quits for tonight. Tons of lead debris! They'd better shoot as they weren't cheap and I've never had to clean ammo before using it🤨.
I've never seen the FX slugs in trays so full of lead debris! I've got two packs left I've had for a few months I'll check this weekend to shoot in My Macavity 22 rifle. I've never seen any worse!

I was blown away by the debis on em given the cost of these! I still have to clean the rest of em but life got busy....Will be sending them outta my ghost (for power) and S510 ( for accuracy hopefully!) into various mediums and report back. They are quite hard lead but with that massive H.P. the ghost will flatten em out for sure 😍

Dan , I don’t apologize, but those slugs are too d#%n expensive for me!

Yeah, they don't group well at 40 at all. Nearly a 3 inch group - I'll whack them around the yard at stuff for shiggles

That's too bad, because they are often the most accurate, or close to it, when I try them. They are the dirtiest ammo made for sure, even for the hybrid line. I shoot the .30 because they are the most accurate round out of my gun, but they are dirty and I have to pull a patch through the bore every fill up. The dirtiness of the .22 though is on a whole other level! It has to be that the typical size of the swarf is near the size of the hollow point and it holds in there more. I learned quickly to not wash them first. The first thing to do is to put them in a paper towel and just roll them back and forth and let the junk come out, dry. I did this four times with one box, the stuff just kept coming out. I have never seen anything even close. Then I washed and lubed them. Luckily, I found better options that cost less and not such of a pain. I mean, accuracy is king, but there is a level at which the fun walks out the door too.

Is this for 'cuda extreme pellets or the slugs?

Tried the Hybrid slugs tonight.
Had this tangerine well past its prime....hmm😏 Getting dark so i threw it up at 15Y in front of a water jug and shot it off my knee twice, big loud pops upon impact, hitting exactly where I aimed.
These things expand like crazy!! Definitely expanded hitting the Tangerine first as judged by damage to the jug. 30fpe gun. Next up will be accuracy at 40-50Y. These are as good as the Patriot slugs for expansion imo.

I managed to get some 20 grain Zan slugs - tested them in clay at about 10 meters and they expand better for me than the 22 grain FX hybrids. I don't need to clean out the hollow point.

20 grain Zan on the left, FX hybrid on the right.

Zans expand perfectly all of the time but for me to get the fx hybrids to expand, I need to clean out the rim of the hollow point. I stick an 30 cal Hornady SST bullet up to the red tip into it to get rid of the inner lip. Otherwise they collapse inwards instead of expanding.
