New York State Airgun Ban In The Works

New York State Airgun Ban In The Works

Yes, it’s true. There’s a New York State airgun ban in the works. It’s included in the current 2025-26 Legislative Session of the state. As the Session ends on 4 June, that means that things could happen very rapidly…

New York State currently has bills in both the state Assembly and Senate that would effectively ban the sale and marketing of all current airguns.

NO, THIS IS NOT A JOKE!

The thrust of the proposed New York State Senate Bill S9215 is to reclassify functional airguns as “imitation weapons.” This legislation would require airguns to be transparent or brightly colored and have a plugged barrel, effectively banning current models as they would no longer be able to fire a projectile.

There is also a proposed New York State Assembly Bill A10701 that appears to me to have exactly the same intent.

Both of these proposed Bills are currently in the “Committee” stage of discussion.

New York State provides residents with the ability to read proposed legislation and give their opinion on it.

You can read the proposed State Senate Bill S9215 here: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/S9215

The proposed Assembly Bill is here: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/A10701

If you live in New York State, you may wish to take a careful look at these web pages – together with the attached PDF files.

The online system allows you to register your support or opposition to this bill and to receive status alerts on its progress through the legislative process. It also provides a link for New York residents to find their state Senator, should you wish to contact them on any issue.

Again, this is not a joke. Yes, it’s true. There’s a New York State airgun ban in the works. And it could happen very rapidly.

Also I know that the Airgun Shooting Association is working on this behind the scenes. We’ll bring you more information on their efforts as it becomes available.

It is a shame this is even happening. I've read through both the bill links and I see wording referring to sales of new airguns, but there does not appear to be any wording to define how this impacts current airguns already in possession. It also does not appear to raise the definition of an airgun from a "weapon" to "firearm" status. With that in mind I don't even see what these bills accomplish - what a waste of resources and impingement on our rights.

And New Jersey is the communist state? New York has us beat.

An Air rifle is a firearm here in the NJ - if you have a firearm purchasing permit for long-guns you can buy as many as you want.
One less place to consider for retirement.
Not so sure about that. You can still shoot and airgun in your backyard in NY without being arresting for "discharging a firearm". And you can use moderators - NJ still sucks more......

BTW - I'm in CT, but belong to a game club in NY where I shoot my airguns. So these laws could directly impact me too.

Looks like I’ll be keeping an eye on this load of Horse dung from this ever declining state, as I enjoy the N50 competition in Salem as often as I can. So happy we moved to PA. So far we’re quite safe here, but the more these commies get a little foothold, the more this will become common language. The state of NY is one beautiful geographical state, but aside from that, it’s sucks hind tit.

I just read all of this and i believe this is just another case of the gov wanting everyone else to be afraid if their own shadow! If your kids toys look too real the cops might shoot them. Has common sense gone so far out the window we should replace all emotions with fear? I thought fear was the only thing we should be afraid of!

For now you can still shoot in NY. I will give you that.

I shoot FT in NY, PA, MA, CT, OH, ME and NC and in order to travel out of NJ I have to go trough NY for most matches I attend so I am none to pleased about this either. There was a time where airguns were illegal in NJ too as they didn't meet certain misguided regs/laws. It got clarified but for 18 months or so I was treading a very fine line between legal and $100,000 fines for taking my airguns to competition.

For better or worse my airgun is treated as a firearm (in NJ) and I've dealt with the laws that apply accordingly. But I doubt I am going to paint my airguns orange for NY to feel good
