First Look At The New Barra 250z PCP Air Rifle

Well, OK, this is actually a second look at the new Barra 250z PCP air rifle! Hard Air Magazine readers actually first saw it in our report from the 2024 SHOT Show back in January.

But now we have a pre-production gun here in-house and can give more information for the first time. Plus – as of today – HAM Readers can place a pre-order on the Barra website to get yours as soon as they are available.

First Look At The New Barra 250z PCP Air Rifle

The HAM testers were very impressed with Barra’s first move into the PCP market. The Barra 1100z was a HAM Gold Award winner as it offered an excellent balance of price with quality.

Now the company is moving further upmarket in the PCP world with the 250z. This is unusual on two counts…

Barra 250z PCP Air Rifle

Firstly it is a bolt action gun, unusual in 2024 with the plethora of sidelever actions around.

Secondly, it has the HPA tank in a tube around the barrel. That tank has a 322 cc capacity and a maximum fill pressure of 3.625 PSI.

That HPA tank position means that there’s no separate HPA tube or tank below the barrel. It also means that the degassing screw is in the top of the gun, within the Picatinny rail.

In fact, there are actually six versions of the Barra 250z, as we can see in the following table.

SKUDescriptionAvailable To PurchaseMSRP
4148.22 Caliber, Tan StockOctober 2024$440.00
4169.22 Caliber, Tan Stock, Canada CompliantOctober 2024$440.00
4170.25 Caliber, Tan Stock, Canada CompliantOctober 2024$440.00
4149.25 Caliber, Tan StockNovember 2024$440.00
4161.22 Caliber, Veil Camo StockNovember 2024$450.00
4160.25 Caliber, Veil Camo StockNovember 2024$450.00

Of course, the Barra 250z PCP air rifle is regulated. The adjustment screw can be seen between the two gauges in the underside of the stock. As expected, one gauge indicates the HPA tube fill pressure , the other shows the regulator pressure.

Hammer spring tension can be adjusted by removing the AR15-style buttstock and turning the screw.

The manufacturer’s claims are for the obligatory 1,000 FPS in .22 caliber. That’s 900 FPS in .25 cal.

More usefully, Barra Airguns tells HAM that they are seeing 940 FPS with 20.2 Grain slugs in .22 cal. That’s 40 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy. In .25 caliber, the numbers are 840 FPS with 33.95 Grain slugs for 53 Ft/Lbs. So it’s going to be a pretty potent air rifle!

Pellet feed is via rotary magazine. The capacity is 10 shots in .22 caliber, 9 shots in .25. There’s also a single shot tray.

At HAM, we paired the Barra 250z with a high quality Sightron S-TAC 3-16 x 42 scope and Leapers UTG PRO rings. The overall weight for this rig was 8 Lbs 9 Oz. It feels lighter than that, however somewhat more muzzle-heavy than we are used to.

HAM will be running our comprehensive, industry-leading review on the Barra 250z PCP Air Rifle in the near future. But if you want to get in first, you can pre-order today from the Barra website here.

The price is $440.00.

Please note that – as we are looking at a pre-production model – there may be some slight differences compared to the final, production guns. However these should not be very significant from the appearance perspective.

Looks like a modified snowpeak LM 50 but a bolt instead of the lever .

If nothing else seems the same stock used .. lol.

That $440 ??? Maaaa.. seems a bit much on that .. that bolt action makes it look dated . ( Ijdk)

There 1100 hits the mark best I kinda think

I'd say more like the m30c, I guess if you can get one in the USA it might be an option although idk anyone distributing them. Snowpeak is like build a bear, they allow companies to customize certain features to be able to brand them separately. Example would be different style bolt, different color stocks, trigger blades and even gauges. My thoughts are this is a really nice gun for the price offered, feels far more solid than the AvengerX imo.

Canadian models you say? hmmm probably stripped the sound suppression out, if it has any....goody lol. To meet Canada spec it has to be loud, under 50cal, cannot be fully auto, and can't shoot laser beams. OK I made up the last one😅 I can't see them going full stop and making them 495fps ie no PAL req?!?! That would be just sad....looking forward to the review!! Hopefully the actual production model has some life breathed into that plain looking plastic stock🤨

From the early reviews it seems to have good power and shot count. I am not a fan of bolts on airguns mostly because they are too light, feel thin, and lack that solid lockup feeling you get with a good firearm. A nice bolt can be very nice indeed, but I haven't seen an airgun yet, with one that I wouldn't have preferred a side lever on instead. My only concern with these style of guns are just how much free time will I have to put aside to service them. Nobody is changing the 50 orings these guns use in a matter of minutes. Watch this video, it's basically the same gun where it counts, the design has been around for a while: AIRGUN Repair - Power Increase - Tune - Tips + Tricks - Basic Guide PCP Air Rifle -Artemis M30
There ain't no sugar coating it, that's a lot of orings to deal with.

I am totally pleased with my Barra 1100Z. It is very accurate and not pellet picky. I have 25 airguns and this Barra 1100Z is one of my favorites. I shoot invasive Eurasian doves consistently at over 60 yards.

A shame no sights .. I think it's a nice affordable fun gun . Being a irons guy a lot of guns just fall to no sale I'd like to try. Oh well .

To quote Karl from InRange: "IT'S NOT THE 90s ANYMORE"! We can get decent AO scopes that will work fine on lower-end PCPs for under $100. Just have a nice test scope to see if you're having scope or gun troubles.

This is essentially a snowpeak/artemis M30C with a few cosmetic changes. These rifles have been available for quite some time here in Europe (and Greece) but they never really caught on... at least so far that is. People have been going for other snowpeak products around here (i.e: the m16 -> aka the "diana"outlaw, the p15 -> aka the "diana" skyhawk, the p35 & m25 among others).

Price wise it costs about 500 Euros (495 from the official snowpeak distributor here in the country). So it's not the most expensive offering (but not the most economic one either).

The only review that existed online for quite some time was Giles' which was listed above in another comment. Truly it does have quite a few o-rings. But, if it's reliable and accurate then so be it. I guess time will tell since the new trend is having the air reservoir around the barrel.

So he's saying pay more for less ( gun) then pay more to be able to use it ? ..lol

Ya ok. Here's a blank check .. lol l

But Ya I guess YOU can .. I can buy with sights and shoot and keep that $100 ( + test scope cost ?) in my pocket ..lol

I mean really .. hook line and sinker in to the racket..lol

Wow. Fools and there money , right?

Please kind sir, Can you tell me more? Seriously though, can you give me a couple suggestions on some of the decent scopes? I'm not shooting further than 40 to 50 yards max, and most of those are to 20 yards or so.

Honestly, that close I'd use one of the Winchester/BSA 4x AO or the Tasco airgun scopes. Pyramyd has the Winchester, Natchez Shooter's Supply has the Tascos. As long as you're not using on a springer, the other sub-$100 scopes at the airgun sites should work. For a little more, hear a lot of good about the toughness of the UTG BugBuster, though some say the reticles are too thick.

Thank you sir! I was just looking at the tag the vortex, and the monstrum, trying to make my mind up for the 50th time. Just need a little push.

Them cheap Winchester scopes get good marks around the forums . No thrills , holds up well . Lots like them .

My Walmart now has the atholn neos line scope at $100+/-

It's no question asked lifetime and mount it on a pea shooter or bazooka athlon don't care and honor's the warranty..
