NateChrony Airgun Chronograph

The NateChrony airgun chronograph is a new, innovative range of projectile speed measurement devices that’s dedicated for use with air rifles and pistols.

The eponymous company and its products are the creation of Nathan Besh – hence Nate. His aim is to provide low cost, accurate chronographs that will help every airgunner achieve the best from his or her shooting.

NateChrony units are optical-sensing devices that attach to the muzzle of an airgun.

Nate is Australian – a proud “Aussie” – and all his products are designed and manufactured in that beautiful country. In the USA, they’re available through Pyramyd.

In order to achieve low cost combined with high quality measurement, NateChrony products are primarily 3D printed from high quality polymer. This provides robust, dimensionally-consistent devices that are tolerant of bumpy life in a typical range bag, Nate says.

Big cost is also saved by using your cellphone as the means of readout and storage for the data generated by the NateChrony airgun chronograph. However there’s no app to manage, just a simple web page interface.

The original – Version 1 – NateChrony airgun chronograph has been joined by a Mini version and the new Version 2. There’s also a range of adapters available and Nate encourages makers to produce their own 3d-printed adapters and even to sell these adapters themselves!

In fact, Nate will be attending the 2024 Pyramyd Cup, so anyone attending that event will be able to meet him there to find out all about his products. He’s also bringing a NateChrony with him for us to review in Hard Air Magazine.

Having talked to Nate by phone, he sounds a great guy and I’m looking forward to meeting him in person at “The Cup” very soon!

Nate takes the view – which I share – that there’s no point in measuring something unless you can do it accurately. So he’s worked with the Australian National Measurements Institute – the Australian Government’s national authority on measurement – in order to get independent testing on the NateChrony.

As a result, he now has “master chronographs” that EVERY NateChrony is calibrated against. This ensures that users can rely on the output that the NateChrony delivers because your unit has been tested and proven to deliver known, traceable results.

That’s HUGE!

So how accurate is it? Nate says that, in the absolute worst case – NateChrony will deliver readings with an accuracy of within 1 FPS at 1,000 FPS. That is better than 99.9% accuracy!

In my opinion, the combination of both precise and accurate measurements is a powerful combination that Nate conveys well in this video:

If it's not pretty universal to fit most everything it's kinda a waste when you need it to , right?

Any idea of the fps range @hameditor? Watched the Vid, he didn't mention it either

Good question! I am sure I saw it somewhere but will need to check. If all else fails, I'll ask Nate at the Pyramyd Cup.

I still use my rather fiddley ProCrono DX; it's a bit time consuming to set up and has even been shot once (I won't mention who shot the poor thing). I receive my data via cellphone, just as Nate's Chroney does. I'm going to keep a careful eye on the NateChrony. At $89.00, I can't lose if it proves to be accurate and reliable. Let me know . . . I'll be a customer. Oh yes, will it work with my underlever rifles? I shoot both a TX200 & HW97K rifle. Orv.

• Easy on/off - it comes with standard 1/2UNF threaded adapters & that's 80% of sales. For moderators & un-threaded barrels it uses "variable adapters" which go OVER an existing moderator. They go up to 55mm >2" in diameter.
  I also have adapters for specific rifles with sights, under levers & odd shapes - hw77/97, TX200, air pistols.... if i dont have it take a pic & send me the dimensions. (doing a HW50 for a guy from Portugal this week).
• Any light conditions - you wouldnt believe the amount of testing & development it took to ensure this very condition. Yes - it absolutely works in every condition, every time. No missed shots, LED lights & fluoro lights are not an issue at all
• FPS range - a projectile must be above 0.5fps & if it "measures" above 2000fps then it throws an error. As this is above the theoretical maximum possible allowed by physics (~1600fps). In fact it comes with a plastic test pellet so you can do a "drop test" to check its all working OK.

Every NateChrony is also tested to have <1fps variance at 1,000fps - as far as I know its currently the most accurate Chrony available & the only one currently in production that is certified/calibrated from a traceable source.

Yeah thats the "difficult" bit for me - i've designed it to use adapters so it can fit on anything, it just needs the right adapters.
Even the exact same model can have different barrel profiles in different countries.

If i dont have the adapter - send a picture with measurements & i'll make something up.

Looks kinda limited on gun useage. Your pro crno dx not so .. cheap china bolt on one I use on every gun I used it with ( so far) ..lol Idk we'll see what happens in the review .

I've had a few customers start to 3D print their own too - so good chance an ecosystem will evolve for these.

Lol why ask @hameditor when u got the ear of @NateChrony ? Welcome! At some point in my life I'm gonna need a 3D printer guy I am very interested in your product but would prefer not to mount it on any gun. I'm sure it could be set up and working on a custom rest (as the El cheapo China ones)? Wearpad grade plastic for gun barrel rest and off to shooting.....that's a decent enough FPS range and my biggest complaint was the lighting issues, which as you know can be difficult to deal with Last question..So it runs some internal built in lights/lasers for it to work all the time?
**Edit** Lol one more question: will you have some already made (somewhat common) adapters to sell with the Chronos?

Lol the issue is I own a break barrel, an underlever, a threaded barrel, and chunky shrouded barrel Air rifle. Would need at least 3 adapters. It can alter poi of course as well sometimes.

yeah there's no magic solution unfortunately.
I went with muzzle mount as alignment can be fixed & gives the best & most accurate detection - but then adapters are needed.

I find that really odd that It wouldn't work that way!?....well I for one am excited for the reviews and people's thoughts on your new device! I am very much NOT a person to run out and grab something Brand new, I lurk...in the forums, review videos, chats, etc.

Achieving the alignment accuracy/tolerance is next to impossible, you'd end up with heaps of missed readings
