What'cha doing air gun related today?

Last edited:
Daughter did not continue her pumpkin today, so hopefully she finishes tomorrow. But I did print and run out to shoot @Billm Big Game airgun challenge. I was going to video, but huge swarms of large wasps are protecting my camera stand suddenly this afternoon. Still was good quick fun, thanks Bill.
You’re welcome. I had issues scoring the animals with so many dark areas. I tweaked the imaging. I also switched the kill zones from being transparent to having a light white wash for better detection. Only on the challenge targets. Let me know what issues you have. I know these types of challenges are very popular with Closer range guns and should provide something for everything. I’m going to concentrate on cleaning up and fine tuning the site.

I took out my EscapeSS in .20 to sight in the last scope I had moved then shot a few rounds at the Know Your Own Limits target. What a ball, I can get all the way through with the JSB 13gr pellets but can't get the last one at 30 yards with the 15gr JSB. That target is worth every penny. I am thinking about getting the chicken spinner to replace the 1/4 spinner. They have their targets on sale at 10% off for Halloween. The Airforce guns are a pain in the butt with the Auto Safety working on them, but when you disengage the auto safety, they are really fun and function flawlessly every time. Can't believe I waited so long to do it.

They use Shopify and the Shop App to sell their products. Put the item you’re interested in, into your cart and don’t purchase it right away and leave it there for a day or two and watch for an email. You might get a surprise. I got an extra $30 discount on my KYL target from them. They use an abandoned cart notification, coupled with a discount to entice you to go back to your cart and complete the transaction. It probably only works on certain items or above a certain price point. It’s worth a try. I think I paid $119.99 for my KYL.

Removed my fx 600mm barrel on Umarex notos as I don't like how it saggs a ting when I put a moderator on it and installed the original barrel. Hammer spring turned in it shot 825 fps on Norma heavy with a ton of wasted air. Backed the hammer spring down all the way and got 775fps and little wasted air. I'm going to send the fx barrel in to get cut down to 17" and use a barrel band from another rifle after I cut it down so the band doesn't clamp the barrel and is just a guide. It's a bit more fun with a 480cc tank than the factory air tube. The consistency of the regulator is great with very little deviation. A spread of 9 fps on 15 shots.

Removed the aftermarket barrel band from the avenge x, going to see if accuracy gets a bit better. It's not bad but could be better I'm guessing. Threw a 3-12 compact bug buster on it and bore sighted it in. Will shoot later today.

If anyone has removed the internals of the avenge x regulator let me know a safe way, seems like it won't budge and I'd like to clean it up to prevent regulator creep. Y'all have a blessed day!

Some back-story. About a year ago I bought two Reximex 'long rifles'. The rifle's are Daystar and Lyra, both in .22 caliber. The two rifles share the majority of parts. Including the barrel, air cylinder, trigger group, valve and all other internal parts.

Both rifles shot exceedingly well for their price range ($300-$400). But, one barrel FAR exceeded expectations! The 'good' barrel has the accuracy of any LW or CZ barrel I have ever owned! The other barrel just couldn't begin to match the accuracy of the 'good' barrel. So, I decided to buy a new barrel in hopes that I would 'hit' the barrel lottery again with a replacement barrel. Air Venturi ordered a new barrel for me from Reximex. Six months later I have the barrel (last week).

A few days back I cleaned the bore and inspected it with my bore scope. Sadly this new replacement barrel had plenty of flaws but was better than the original.

Yesterday I polished the bore and got the rifle back together. This morning I started testing and I am disappointed to report that at this point, my new barrel doesn't group any better than the barrel it replaced.

I'll continue to work with the tune and will even try some JSBs instead of the AEAs and JTSs I used today. Hopefully I can find improvement. Time will tell???

I went to shoot my .177 Nova liberty and nothing. It appears locked up. I'd fired last a few months ago. I degassed and since I wanted to lower the regulator I did. Aired it up and same thing. Very short burst of air and the pellet basically falls out. I took it apart and then got busy with unrelated stuff. Opened another liberty I purchased at the same time that has never been opened to confirm that it's in there, and it'll be off to it's new home soon.

I compared the size of the barrel end of the .177 liberty and the .25 cal avenge x barrel and they are identical outer diameter, one o-ring "guide" near the front of the breach is in a slightly different position but overall it's the same barrel. Air venturi kept the design very close. Also the avenge x barrel port is horribly under sized. Will have to open it up for efficiency.

That's a bit of a disappointment, waiting so long for no change. What flaws did you notice in both the barrels? Asking for experience
The original barrel had a bad spot in one groove right at the crown. It also had many imperfections along the whole length of the bore. Irregular and inconsistent marks from a poor rifling process. But the worst part was the machining of the leade into the bore! Hard to explain, but the cut into the lands appeared to be done with a dull tool as the steel was pushed over to one side of the lands and each land had a different look to it at the place where it was cut with the reamer.

The new barrel had a perfect crown and only a few imperfections along the length of the rifling. However, the leade cut into the lands was just as bad as the original barrel..., if not worse!

I won't spend any more money on the Lyra trying to get the accuracy I want from it. I'll get it shooting the best I can and just use it for 'trigger time' shooting.

I got some of the .177 8gr JSB pellets from Walmart and tried them out in the Vectis and TallonSS. They shot 12 dots low in the Vectis and about an inch low in the TallonSS. But they did pretty well in both guns. Then I got out the Know Your Own Limits target and went crazy on that with both of them. Using those I could not hit the 1/4 swinger with the Vectis, but I could hit it with the TallonSS at 30 yards. Too much fun.

The breech/Leade in my 250Z was bad too. Now that you have a spare barrel to practice on, you could get some cratex bits and try fixing yours. I shaped the cratex bit using a file while running it in a drill, making the shape and size I wanted. Making the bit the right shape takes all the time. Actually running the bit to do the work is under half of a minute total. With a spare barrel you have little to lose and a lot to gain. Here's my original post:

250Z - 250z - Working On It!

This morning I decided that I was going to shoot my 250z as my 'daily' target/bench rifle for the Winter. The rifle is tuned for AEA 21.9gr but I thought maybe I would re-tune it for AEA 18.3s to save money on ammo for target shooting.

Before I changed anything on the 250z I thought I would shoot the AEA 18.3s on the current tune (AEA 21.9) just out of curiosity. Since my 21.9gr is 940fps I knew the 18.3s would be 'cookin'! I didn't expect very good accuracy from the 18.3s on the 21.9s tune but wow..., was I in for a surprise! 990fps average and the 18.3s were 'stackin'!

I am shocked that the 18.3s can group at 990fps! The first couple test groups were so good I decided to shoot the target below to share here on the board.

After re-zeroing my optic I fired the 20-shot group below. All shots required me to make slight hold adjustments based on what my wind flags/vane showed me. The one impact out of the group was caused from a 180-degree wind shift that I missed after putting my head down behind the scope. No B.S. that's why that one shot fell off target.

I think I'll shoot AEA 18.3s for my Winter bench shooting and I won't even have to change the rifle from my AEA 21.9 tune! Though..., I am wondering if reducing the velocity some might improve the overall accuracy???

I find them to shoot great in all my rifles from 880 to 980. I mean with that group I would run with it. The most accurate speeds are around 940-960 so if you slow them down slightly might help???
