Spring/Piston PLAYING IT SAFE, PLEASE HELP.

Glad to hear @Hoppalong Doc ! I reread the thread and see I suggested checking the "cocking shoe" I meant the stock bracket!! I included a pic ot it.... this bracket and screw was it? The usual culprit if it gets loose.
I have finally taken my TX out for a good run after my TBT tune kit....not alot has changed unfortunately. Still needs plenty of warm up shots before it gets accurate again. And somehow my Airmax scope was, yet again, waaaay low (did not remove scope to install kit).

I'm shooting JSB 15.89 gr pellets running at 654 fps.with a Vortek Tune. Is this what others are experiencing as well? Others have suggested that it should be closer to 750 fps. I suppose that I'm just a bit nervous after my years long saga of problems with this rifle. Anyway, it's shooting where I point it, so I guess that I should just sit back and enjoy it. To think that all these difficulties caused by a very loose stock bracket. Geeesh! Thanks to all who have been of help, Orv.

Dan: We can cry on each other shoulders, but oh no! We're still shooting at the range enjoying peace. I've still got my HW97K, and soon will have my HW50S 75th Anniversary model. Everything I choose the shoot is in .22 cal. Orv.

He said why would you Detune and make such a wonderful rifle less powerful.

My TX200, with a 11.9 Vortek Tune on it is simply day & night smoother to shoot, and therefore not only quite accurate, but finally so much fun to shoot. Oh . . . It is unbelievably quite too. What more can I say? I don't need or want a springer rifle that shoots at a zillion ft power per nano second. Shhhhh, quiet, and hits the Bullseye too. I'm finally happy with my TX200. Wheww!

There might just be the reason that you are shooting 100 fps lower than "you should". Could be that others are quoting velocity from a full power kit. I'm thinking that I'm going to put a sub 12 pound kit in mine as well. Glad to hear that you are satisfied with yours, good news.

Pyramyd air sells a spring compressor for the 97. I installed a vortek stage 4 kit in 1 and i would never want to do it again.

It's a bit strong on the cocking lever, but this old man still loves to shoot it. There's no twang upon shooting, but the the piston slam is a bit strong. So, I'm still thinking a Vortek tune. By the by, I have the Air Venturi spring compressor from Pyramyd. I received it as a "free" gift for the purchase of a gun 5 or 6 years ago. I haven't really found it very useful. I've got one drawn out that I can build for under $20.00. Orv.

The cap for the spring is threaded. The spring very strong i had a hell of a time getting the threads started and then keeping enough pressure on the cap to not strip the threads.

My HW97KT has a vortek kit in it. It is far smoother than my TX 200 at this point, and cocking is easier as well.

There might just be the reason that you are shooting 100 fps lower than "you should". Could be that others are quoting velocity from a full power kit. I'm thinking that I'm going to put a sub 12 pound kit in mine as well. Glad to hear that you are satisfied with yours, good news.

The shot cycle is quieter vs stock with no spring buzz now but recoil is still harsh, I'm not thrilled tbh. I will be pushing it out to 30-40Y soon, weather depending.
My brother did the vortek kit on his Diana 350magnum without a spring compressor....he said it was not fun!
The TX is still the king of simplicity to tear down.

Anyone i ever talked to at ft matches says the tx is the easiest to change springs.

I'll be interested to hear about your experience with the TBT kits. I watch Nick's ytube videos with interest and might consider putting one of his kits into one of my rifles. I guess that I 'm just hooked on shooting and playing with my air rifles. It's the boy in me. Orv.
