The Mantis 1x30DV Red Dot Scope is a new red dot sight with an unusual feature. It fits good, old-fashioned airgun dovetail scope rails!
That’s a big deal as the overwhelming majority of red dot sights have – and always have had – Picatinny mounts. That’s been a source of frustration for me in the past as the two mounting styles are completely different and totally incompatible.
So – if you have one of the following air rifles and are looking for a red dot sight, this new Mantis unit will be ideal for a wide range of airguns, including the following:
– The majority of multi-pump guns that have an optics rail, including the Seneca Dragonfly, and even the Crosman 760.
– Several very popular Diana models, including the Chaser and Bandit. However the magazine may not then fit, requiring the gun to be single-loaded.
– The Diana Stormrider PCP air rifle would also fall into this category. But, overall, it could still be a good option.
This Mantis red dot sight can also be used with airguns having “combined airgun/Picatinny scope rails”. Guns with these include the Umarex Komplete and Iconix.
In addition, some air pistols have dovetail scope mounting rails, for example the Crosman 2240XL.
So the Mantis 1x30DV Red Dot Scope has a wide range of potential uses.
The only dovetail rail-equipped airguns I would not fit it to are breakbarrel, spring-piston and gas ram-powered air rifles. The Mantis is not described as being able to stand up to the violent forward recoil produced by these guns and I would expect them to destroy the internals in short order. Don’t do that!
As we can see from the photograph above, this Mantis unit has turrets for both elevation and windage adjustment. These have 1 MOA clicks (approximately 1/10 of an Inch at 10 Yards range).
There’s 11 brightness settings for the red dot and – like all such sights – the Mantis has an infinite eye relief, meaning that there’s no limitations on mounting position, as there is with a direct optical, magnifying riflescope.
The 1 x 30 designation indicates that this unit – again like most similar sights – has a 1x magnification (i.e. same-size view as the naked eye), combined with a 30mm diameter lens system.
At a price of $49.99, this will be a good buy for many airgunners who enjoy close-range plinking, or need rapid sight acquisition for dealing with those pesky squirrels attacking the bird feeder 10 Yards downrange…
