Is This The Most Powerful Springer Air Rifle?

Is this the most powerful springer air rifle? And – if so – how would you manage shooting it?

New on Pyramyd Air is the Gamo Magnum GR break barrel air rifle. In .25 caliber, the manufacturers claim is for a maximum Muzzle Velocity of 1,000 FPS using alloy pellets.

Now, the lightest .25 caliber alloy pellets I can find are the 16.54 Grain Predator GTO lead-free pellets. If we assume that these are the ones used for that “1,000 FPS” claim, that would make the Muzzle Energy a huge 36.74 Ft/Lbs. WOW!

Interestingly, the specs on the Pyramyd web page indicate that this is a spring/piston gun (in spite of the “GR” title which I originally thought stood for Gas Ram). The power comes from a massive, 33mm diameter compression chamber.

Even with a long, 19.7-Inch, barrel Pyramyd specs say that the cocking effort is a monster 41 Lbs. WOW! – again. That’s waaaaaay too much for me to cock. This is clearly a model for “real men” only!

The .25 caliber Gamo Magnum GR is fitted with the company’s Shock Wave Absorber (SWA) recoil pad. That’s probably a really good idea as it’s claimed to lessen the felt recoil by 75% when shooting.

Another good feature is the company’s Recoil Reducing Rail (RRR) 11mm dovetail scope-mounting rail. Gamo says that this provides 99.9% recoil relief and maximizes your scope’s lifespan.

The 3-9 x 40 scope that’s bundled with this airgun will certainly benefit from both the included “one piece” scope mount and the RRR capability.

At an all-up weight (including the scope) of around 8 Lbs 2 Oz and an overall length of 49.2 Inches, this is a big air rifle that’s obviously designed for big, strong hunters. That 36+ Ft/Lb Muzzle Energy is in the range of many PCPs and – while it does not need the complications of High Pressure Air charging equipment – it could be ideal for those wanting a few, high-power shots a day in a hunting environment.

The Street Price is $319.99.

So, is this the most powerful springer air rifle? And how would you manage shooting it?

Hmmmm.... The magnum gr "was" a gamo exclusive gun.

Funny just looking the .25 is not listed at gamo for sale . The magnum gr .22 still is listed .

Seems like a year or two ago (???) i posted on this .25 for sale at Gamo as one of there new exclusive gun deals in another forum thread because it was spring and .25 .

Gamo still has lead .25 pellets now the only .25 pellets on there site.

I guess the magnum gr .22 is still a gamo exclusive gun..

Gamo Magnum GR .22 High Power Pellet Break Barrel Rifle

So i got to wonder why Gamo put the .25 off the gamo sales only ?

Hmmmmm...

All this assumes the shooter can hit what he is aiming for. I have two spring (not gas) airguns, both of which are under-levers (no break barrel). They shoot reasonably well at distances out to about 40 yards max, and will do so every time. The biggest issue I see, especially with gas ram guns which are very difficult to cock, is barrel sagging and loose hinges.

Maaaa.... Ya , naa , maybe ...
My Gamo is like 5 years old and mega high shot count on it. Seems to do ok or as good as i can ask anyway..

Thing i learned or now figure is with gamo the better warranty time serms the better rifle... So a 5 uear gun your probably going to be better the there 1 year stuff.

Big issue with gamo is common parts like these 33mm piston seals . As far as i know you go to cas Australia for one and thats it . There not user fix friendly.

Anyway the hunter extreme pro wood stock gun in .22 probably do good. I kinda like it.

For break barrel Rifles:
My Ruger (.22)is a nitro gas piston; been slinging lead with it for 8 years now🤩
Then my Winchester (.177)is a spring; it seems harder to cock but it's only about a year old.

I thought on a underlever like a hw 77, but anymore feeding a wide open break barrel with my poor eyes and club fingers is got hard enugh. Especially .177..lol. Just about need my glasses each pellet to insure i hit the hole and its not loading in backwards.

I've got the Ruger Impact Max Elite 22. I've had it about 4 years. Don't shoot it much anymore but it's fairly accurate, minute of squirrel for sure. Back issues got me into PCP rifles but you never know when you might need a good ole reliable break barrel so I keep it in my collection!

I have yet to see anyone chronograph the Gamo. If they did, I missed it. I would assume that the RWS 350 Diana 22cal would be about 26 foot pounds in 22cal with the right tune kit.

Maybe so. The Hatsan is a .30 cal gas springer that gets 590 fps & 34 ft lbs with around 50 lbs cocking effort. Keep in mind, a lot of the time, airguns don’t reach the max fps. It’s usually “trick” pellets. I see the max fps as lawyer talk.
I've got the 30 caliber Hatsan Carnivore break barrel too. I ordered it from PA with synthetic stock a few years ago but when it arrived they accidentally shipped the wood stock version. It has such a short barrel it's impossible for me to cock it with my bad back. Can't get any leverage you know what I mean? So it's only been shot by my son about 25 times. I've got 2 full tins of 30 caliber pellets and it's just sitting in my gun cabinet till I trade or sell for something else!
