.30 FX Halo on Pigeons: Report, plz

Did you see the video of the Starling blowing up on the Utah Airgun video? I am pretty sure it would look a lot like that with even more blood. Parental Warnings and Viewer Advisories on those videos, lol.

Perfect: That's precisely the point of my question, Carl! 👍🏼👍🏼

Not starlings, not hosps
but pigeons.
Spectacular terminal performance on pigeons....

➧ What does it take?

What country are you at sir? I HIGHLY recommend Patriot slugs if wanting explosions on pest birds, might be easier to get them then the Halos, for now anyways. The FX Hybrids rival them but less size options, and oh my are they ever dirty...only lead ammo i have ever bought that i cleaned them all before use.

Even the FX Hybrids are out of stock at a lot of places now, but my understanding is that these people make the FX Hybrids and that these are the same thing for a cheaper price, but you have to buy a larger quantity of them. Sorry I can't help with the Halo's, I have only seen this FX Halo video myself.

Please take a look at this post. I can't upload here because my pictures are too big to attach. I shot a few Halos into ballistics gel to see how they could perform. They look nasty against small game. They're probably the most violent conventional slug I've tested so far. They almost instantly fragment on impact and I believe they will do that to quite a distance. They would shred a pigeon.

Bob, thank you so much for running that test into ballistic gel. 👍🏼

Seeing how the fragments are all within 2" (5cm) of the entrance gives hope that the fragmentation inside a pigeon will actually take place instead of a pass-through. 👍🏼

Of course, your MV was exceptionally high (1025fps) — but at 46gr weight not hard with a typical .30cal gun.

Did you use 10% or 20% ballistic gel?

I'll probably try out a few shots at 75 or so yards this weekend and see if it will still fragment. That's pretty much the longest straight line shot I have access to.

It's hard to get a good picture of, but expansion appears to start instantly and fragmentation appears to happen within the first inch of gel which is a good sign for pigeons. You're correct about my gun's muzzle velocity. It's tuned pretty hot from the factory and I haven't played around with it too much yet.

I'm not sure what Clear Ballistics uses for their animal targets. This was one of their rabbit targets I've had for a little bit. I've hunted around quite a while and they don't have the percentage listed anywhere. I could've sworn they said it was 10% at some point but I can't verify that.

Talk about EXPLOSIVE. How's the accuracy on these slugs?
They are extremely loud on impact. I made the mistake of taking a shot at super close range on the ballistics gel rabbit to see what would happen. The impact made my ears ring and everything got really quiet for a few seconds before coming back to normal. Slug impacts are loud up close, but that's the worst one I've ever experienced. I won't be doing that again.

Accuracy seems fine and every slug went more or less where I wanted it to go. I'm using a brand new Avenge-XL that I haven't had time to get fully familiar with so my groups aren't anything special. This is on top of getting back up to speed from not shooting all winter due to the extreme cold. It's mostly plinking for me at the moment. There don't seem to be any crazy fliers or other funny behavior though which is a good sign. It's a bit of a different experience compared to the Avenge-X I've shot many thousands of pellets and slugs through so it's throwing me off a bit.

@JungleShooter
No Pigeons, but a few chipmunks with some pretty impressive terminal effects. Expansion in even such small game was immediate and explosive. I shot chipmunk #1 from about 40 yards from an elevated position. The impact was about midway down the body right on the spine. The kinetic energy transfer threw him about 5 or 6 feet and pretty much removed all of his internal organs. The picture isn't the best because I had to dig him out of some mud and clean him up a bit for a picture. Chipmunk #2 was a lung shot at 25 yards and wasn't quite as violent but still caused massive damage. There was a log behind him and it caught a fragment of the slug and what I assume is a piece of rib. I managed to find what remained of the slug both times and all that was left was the base.

Quite spectacular, Bob.

Thanks for sharing! 🤝🏼

This looks indeed promising.
➧ I was just working on a plan what guns to use for what purpose, caliber, and power settings —
and I am going to put my chips on the Halo.
Not an FX fan.
But a slug like this — that gives expreme expansion — should have been designed and offered years ago....

I wished it had been NSA that had come forward with a product like this....

Matthias

PS:
Bob, if you had some specs that would help me determine the impact velocity....
(say, muzzle velocity and range would be enough).
Thanks. 😊

Roughly 1025 FPS at the muzzle. Ranges were 40 Yards for Chipmunk #1 and 25 Yards for Chipmunk #2 as stated in my previous post.

If you want similar performance, try some ZAN slugs if you haven't already. They don't tend to fragment like the Halos, but they fully expand almost instantly and have given me similar overall performance before. The damage wasn't quite as extreme in my experience, but I was shooting .25 ZAN slugs at roughly half the power level my .30 Avenge-XL is putting out. I recommend getting the lightest slug that ZAN makes in your preferred caliber and getting them going as fast as your gun can accurately shoot them. Light Zan slugs really like to dump all their energy quickly. That energy dump will pop pigeons pretty well.
