Others Benchrest HEAVY scope; Vortex Razor HD Gen 2 - question

I could use the weight on my Avenge X, and I just happen to have the Vortex Razor HD2 4.5-27 in my aresenal. Any thoughts on mounting it for benchrest work?
Weight is good for benchrest, unless you’re shooting in the events that have weight limits. I have a Discovery 4-25 ED on the Marauder. It’s a heavy beast, but all of my high mag scopes are. I had the Athlon 15-60 Ares on it at first. The 40x calibration is perfect for 50yds. But, my rings were too high for 50yds. I don’t know anything about Vortex scopes, but it sounds like it would be a great match for 50-100yds benchrest.

Hmm. So this isn't too far out of the realm. I think I'll break it out and give it a try. Thanks Bill.

Well, I did honest range shooting at 52 yards at the club today. After my day at the range, I am convinced that digital scopes are great for critters, not so much for bench work. I am also convinced that with even my best tuning efforts, the avenge x needs more tweaking. I am also convinced that I am going to strap that three pound Razor on the rifle to take the digital scope doubts off the table. I am also convinced that I used to be a better shot.

I have been carefully examining the chrono results, and have been contemplating fps drop with tube pressure drop. I have huge spikes in fps after filling, or even if I let the gun sit idle while I reload. I think I need more hammer spring tuning after my first 100 shots with a fstd deviation of 5.6. Last 50 shots tethered to the bottle with a std deviation of 2.3fps. I will tune on,. I will persevere.

So, after examining my lessons of the day, the meaning of life, my relationship with my wife, kids, and my god, I did what I think any self respecting HAMster would do. I bought a better scope. Hawke Sidewinder 30 SF 6-24x56. And I bought a better gun to go with it. RTI P3 on the way. :) I feel better already!

@Awl In I would not let a stand D of 6 bother you. That is not going to cause issues at 50 yards. The bigger concern would be the extreme spread. The example would be if you are keeping most shots within +/- 5fps with random swings of 15-20fps.

With an unregulated gun you might find a fill pressure sweet spot. Some tunes will allow you to fill to max pressure. others will want you to only fill to 2800psi vs 3000. That is ok. For accuracy work there might be a pressure window that works best. When shooting for accuracy stay in that window.

All that might be a moot point with the new purchase! Good luck with the new setup and let us know how it goes.

Thanks John. I agree that the spikes are troubling. I can only assume that there is a regulator issue. I do not have a lot of confidence as to the quality of the chinese equipent i purchased, and I am not willing to throw more dollars at a platform that cannot really perform much better. Great feedback here; thanks guys. Best, Kevin

I love the convenience of some of the features of my DNT TNC225R digital. One touch zeroing, laser range finding and touch button ballistic solution and of course video recording. But, I found it horrible for target shooting. The poor resolution and difficulty to handle high contrast targets in bright sunshine made it very difficult to see BR targets at 100yds. I guess it boils down to using the right tool for the job. I thought that I wasn’t happy with the clarity of my Discovery Optics scopes, even the ED with its Japanese glass. After buying the most expensive scope that I’ve ever purchased that is a BR scope, I’m more than pleased with the Discovery scopes.
The extreme spread and large velocity spikes kicked my butt with the Panthera.

So Ive got the vortex on the bench. Just ordered some 3/4" risers to be able to clear the magazine. This should put the scope height at approx 66mm, which I don't think is too terrible?
