250Z Broken sear 250z. Common problem?

I recently got a 250z, my first PCP. I got it all set up and was getting ready to put it's first charge in it but I wanted to turn down the regulator first. So I opened the bleed screw then went to dry fire it a couple times. On the second dry fire the trigger was dead. I went to recock it and the hammer wouldn't catch. So I took the stock off and found the sear/hammer catch was broken off at the spring pocket. Is this a common issue with these? I've goggled it and only found one mention of it.

I contacted Barra and am working on getting them to replace the sear. I also ordered one from their website to get one here quicker. If they send me a second one I'd like to have a back up if it happens again. Kinda feeling frustrated with it. I do like the rifle though.

I may design a whole new set of sears for the 250z. This is now becoming a commen issue, and should be addressed. I will start work on this in the morning.

Same for me..., grew up with rifles. I built several 'chuck' rifles on Rem 700 actions on H.S. Precision stocks and Jewel triggers.

With regard to the 250z safety, I never use it either. I never walk with the rifle cocked while hunting. For the 250z I hunt with the single-shot tray so if the shot doesn't happen while I'm on stand I just de-cock the rifle with a pellet in the breech and move to the next spot.

Sounds like you have a system that is safe while you use the rifle so the safety issue isn't a big deal for you.

I fired the 250z on target this morning just to confirm zero is still on. It never changes but you know what I mean. I'm heading out to find a chuck again tomorrow. The 250z sits nicely on my shooting sticks and is easy to hunt with shooting off the turkey seat.

I hadn't thought of decocking with one in the chamber. I'll for sure use that. I'll just have to be careful to not double feed I guess. The sear will be here Friday. I can't wait.

I was thinking it wouldn't be hard to fab one up out of better material. It looks like centered metal is what they use for it and with that spring pocket being so deep it's gotta be really weak right there.

It looks like I can get a safety bar from Barra. I'll probably order one just to have the ability to put it all back to stock if I do go that route. I come from shooting powder burners, long range precision type stuff. The safeties on those rifles never gets used. The bolt is always open until I'm on target and ready to shoot. When I'm hunting with a rifle the chamber is usually empty ans i move around. I'm not sure how conducive that method would be with this PCP but I'll figure it out. I like to tinker till things are just how I like them. I appreciate all the advice.

Like I said, DON'T touch the bar, there is absolutely no need. The safety is two pieces that go through the stock. One side of the safety has a shoulder that rests on that bar. THAT is what you take down if your safety won't engage. Even if you take it down too much it won't effect the gun, you just will have to be the safety, unless you order another. Do what you want, but I wouldn't touch the actual trigger group. I don't like downtime.

THAT is what you take down if your safety won't engage. Even if you take it down too much it won't effect the gun, you just will have to be the safety, unless you order another. Do what you want, but I wouldn't touch the actual trigger group. I don't like downtime.

The confusion here is that what you describe as the 2-peice safety is what I have been calling the, 'safety bar'. We are talking about the same piece. In other words, I am not suggesting modification to any of the trigger group levers.

No problem, I understand that you understand, I just don't want anyone else reading this thread to work on the wrong part. A lot of us did originally. There was some really bad stories. The trigger group can be problematic. The saftety work itself is actually one of the easiest fixes ever. It's a tough call to give advice on safeties because people have been sued doing so. It's hard knowing who has the chops to do things carefully on an anonymous internet. Clever people will find a way though!

I meant switch/button not bar. I'm thinking I'll just leave the safety out and use other methods to keep it in a safe state until I'm ready to shoot.

Yeah, it showed up yesterday. I got it installed and it seems to work great. I didn't have time to charge it up and shoot it yet though. Maybe today. I did the single stage trigger conversion with the rouge air spring and have that feeling pretty good. It's really light with just a little creep. It's definitely better than how it came from the factory.

Interesting you have some 'creep' setup as single-stage. Mine has zero take-up/creep setup single-stage???

The creep is very minimal I could adjust it out but then the trigger is super light. Way lighter than I like. I'll keep tinkering with it once I start shooting it.

Brought it up till the JST Dead Center 25.39gr pellets were running about 910fps (2100 on the reg gauge). I'm really happy with the SDs and accuracy. I shot about a hundred pellets with both the magazine and single shot tray.

The hammer spring is where it was from the factory (flush with the back of the block). I would like to squeeze as much performance out of it as a can but I'm not sure if I even need to mess with the HS yet.

I'm living at 8000 feet above sea level this summer. That's where I did my shooting today. 55 shots took me from 3600 psi to 2500 psi, which was way more shots than i was expecting. Is there a write-up I can study to understand the effects of altitude on PCP air guns?

I'm feeling really good about this 250z now!

My advice is to take your time with tuning. Give yourself a chance to get more familiar with the rifle and to get a good 'feel' for exactly how it is performing.

I'm sure there is plenty of reads online that speak about all the affects of shooting air rifles at altitude but I can't think of any at the moment to point you toward. Perhaps one of the others on this board has a thread in mind that they can recommend.

If you are at 8000' are you also in rock chuck country? Hunting chucks with an air rifle is a very sporting affair.

Yes, except modification to the safety bar. If you modify the safety bar to work with the single-stage setting it will not work if you go back to two-stage. But, if you are just testing to see which way you want the trigger then there is no need to mess with the safety. Just leave the bar out of the trigger group until you decide how ya want the trigger.

And, of course 'NorthEastBeast' sells his trigger kit to improver the trigger while staying with two-stage function. I haven't used his kit but others in here have it installed and can comment.

I can and will comment here. I own 2 barra 250z's in .25 caliber.

My woman's, has had heavy internal modifications, from air flow, to barrel tuning. Soon to be a c88 plenum as well. Trigger kit, and slug kit installed as well.

Mine, is stock as she gets, minus a c88 plenum install.

Both are absolute laser beams with Franco 32 grain slugs. Post tuning.

I made my wife tune for experience from Apollo 33 grain slugs. She says the slug kit is her absolute highest recommendation.

She can shoot a dime(if that) at 50 yards all day long. She does not pest, or hunt.

Mine is haaaaaaate the stock trigger tensioning system. She loves it. I pulled the trigger out of hers, and returned it to stock. She is thrilled.

I found, if pulling the outer adjustment pin on the hammer spring, and moving to the desired, or testing spot, and thread and Teflon progressive wrapping its threads, it is usable, and adjustable okay ish. I can live with it. But the stock trigger I believe it is far beyond lacking.

I hunt, and pest with mine. From 100- 40 yards.

As others have stated, do not mess with your safety. *looks up while kicking dirt* it is dangerous if you dont know what you are doing.(factual)*staring at ground.* dont do this, with a match grade trigger.

Ive seen the full gambit, from just clean, to do all types of things with the barrel. That is a 100% you call.

This second new batch of barrels i will tell you my experience for .25.

Cleaned, shooting slugs, at 930, I had nickle size at 55.

Cleaned, and polished, and slugged with h&n 32 grain regulars 2505 I had dime coverage. Slightly lower at 925 average.

Cleaned polished and slugged the way with same slug weight 2495 h&n, 920 average, random flier, higher velocity.

Same barrel concept, francos weighed due to hand made specialty slugs, (i requested cup) 32 grain, 928, 927.

Jsb 251's, quarter size at 50, running 916 with h.s adjustments.

Lothar is on its way, mind you, full custom machining from said barrel maker, unknown twist, I will be gathering data from my personal unopened internals, only upgrades will be trigger, and barrel(hopefully) and a c88 machining plenum.


With o.p. origional issue, This is the first I have read of seer failure from manufacturer unmodified. Having worked on multiple coworkers 250z's, and made personal modifications to 4, after their new q.c. implementations, all in .25, because of there experience with my wife's, it really sounds like you got afar and few between one off.

I agree. I think I just got a bad sear and due to the lack of information about others having similar issues I have resolved it to just being bad luck. Barra was great to work with in getting a new sear sent under warranty. I'm just glad to be shooting it and can't wait to really get it dialed in.

Bro, buy as many slugs as you can once you dial into a comfortable weight. . Its so hard not to see 'can I hit that?' And the giggle when you do.

You really won't want to put it down.

BTW, stock, qdfox, and big air mags.

28g and under slugs, stock are good, 28- 30, qd fox mags are bang for bucks.

Nothing beats the precision fitment of big air mags in my opinion.

Pellets, qd fox, all day long.

I just had the sear brake for an unknown reason. The gun was slowly losing air so I figured it was time to replace orings. I tried to cock the action and it wouldn't. Now I see they are out of stock.
