Benchrest Slug shooters being left out?

Maybe they are just trying to maintain some old school tradition. At that level if they had a slug class then you would have 2 people in the pellet class.

You mentioned minimal pass through with .177 slugs a couple times. If you haven't already, I'd suggest you shoot into some gallon jugs at your typical starling distances. I did the same with my 35fpe .20 slugs last summer and was shocked at how hard it was to stop them. Ended up needing to stack boxes of bar soap to keep them from blowing right theough, cuz I couldn't with even multiple jugs if water.

This was mostly expansion testing, but also shows how hard it is to stop slugs.

I shoot a lot of prairie dogs with them, and they all go through the dogs, even the occasional hits on 200yard shots. Pass-throughs evidenced by the dust clouds from the slug bouncing, out beyond the perforated prairie dog.

I have seen that with .22 slugs too. I thought the JSB KO were not penetrating as much as they were, because the ZAN's did so much better, but it was all relative too. Shot through a chipmunk and an aluminum gutter real easily! That was when I switched to just .177 up close, and around buildings, doing pesting.

The JSB KO MK3's 10.03gr slug, NOT the regular 10.03gr KO, they are quite different, are the best fragmenting, energy dumping pieces of lead that I have used yet. From hosps to rabbits, under 75y, this is what I have been using around buildings and shooting up. There is little left to ricochet too, with so little mass. A lot safer but still very deadly with good range.

I don’t think that is necessarily true. I think you may add more people that think they might finally have a chance in a pellet class if the top guns move to slugs and even longer distances.

Agree, plenty of folks would be ready to fill any open slots.

Especially if they kept the pellet class a non pro or sponsored shooter. The joe average class and since the payouts are getting so big kick some cash to joe average class
To draw them in. This is what buggs me about the big shoots as they stand. First they are hard to get in for joe average second you have guys that are sponsored at a minimum that joe average on a shoe string budget gooes up against. What are the chances for poor joe?

From the perspective of event organizers, I can image that adding an additional slug Benchrest class would be a great burden. Both Extreme Benchrest and the Pyramyd Cup both run to three full days already. My guess is that they would need to add another day to include another class of shooting.

That would take the event into four days. Would competitors be prepared to take such a long time? More importantly, even running the current three-day events stretches the organizers to the limits. Four days could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. (That's just my opinion, BTW).

Given that these events are run by relatively small companies in addition to their day-to-day business, I think that is asking too much.

Both Pyramid and AoA make an outstanding job of running their shoots, but they are not dedicated event- management companies. So I feel that adding "slug Benchrest" in addition to "pellet Benchrest" is not likely to happen.

Just my $0.02.

To be fair the guy who just won RMAC won it with a Red Panda that was fresh out of the box and he never shot it before. The learning curve is easier than ever and high powered slugs are plug and play in my experience. If an average Joe has the money, he is basically competitive right away.

The guy who has the becnhrest and extreme field target event in Oregon is doing it right. He added slug benchrest right away and clearly has the vision to see where the sport is headed. From what I gather he is adding ultimate field target as well with slugs. EBR and the pyramid cup could easily extract a couple event to fit in slug events. But, I do see your point of view. I’m not sure I’d go that far. He removed it from the box that was used to ship it to him. But he was given the gun from the DonnyFL/Karma/ST guys that had gone over it with a fine tooth comb, tuned it to a tee, and made sure everything was good, including accuracy and precision. Contrary to popular folklore, it was not a gun that Joe Schmoe ordered online and was taken out of the warehouse and sent to him. And I’m pretty sure he shot the gun prior to RMAC.

Wayne is doing it right in OR. We have EXTREME (not Ultimate) Field Target Grand Prix event, 100Y pellet, 100Y slug, and a Long Range Challenge. He is not as far as I know adding slugs to the EFT event. That one is pellets only. Four events in three days.

PAC has three events in three days. I’m sure they could fit in a slug 100Y event if they were so inclined.
EBR already has six events in three and a half days. It would be tough to squeeze in another event.

That may be, and I don’t doubt it all. But, I don’t believe it was an off the shelf gun. I tend to lean more to what @Centercut just posted.

The guy has an entire YouTube segment on it. Anyone can get that gun like he did.
