Break Barrel Beeman R9 .20 Cal Rare?

Last edited:
Hi Everyone,

I just won an online auction for a beauiful Beeman R9 with a decent looking AO scope mounted on it. My question, are the .20 cal versions rare, worth more money? I was in a bidding war and luckily won. Paid $461 but I really wanted this gun, has the nicest wood grain stock I've ever seen. I would appreciate any information from the members about this treasure. Thanks in advance.

Depends ... I think not as popular as .177 or .22 but lots think is special and most times special order .. ether way it's something nice . Lot of guys prefer .20 and it's a niche gun .. post this at agn or gateway and you'll get a lot of likes and ooh ah's ..

Only bad thing is .20 ammo availability.. not as much or easy to get as .177/22.

Thing is it's a hw/r so it's a solid lifetime gun so to say .. as long as you did not over pay your in good shape

I don't think the Beeman R9 .20 is a rare airgun. I bought my R9 .20 back in 2002. At that time most internet airgun retailers that stocked Beeman had the .20 available in various models. I bought a R7 .20 about a year after I bought the R9. Dr. Beeman was an advocate of the .20 caliber. I still have my original Beeman R9 .20 with the Bushnell AO scope that came in a package with a hard case. I believe you paid a fair price if it is in as good of condition as you indicate. I still have my R9. Picture below:

You're R9 is very nice! Here's a couple pics of my R9 from the auction website. Hopefully I'll receive it in a couple weeks. Please forgive the poor resolution. Will post better pics when I have it in hand.

Thanks! Looking forward to your impressions and pictures when you get it. Looks like a different stock from the one that came on mine.

Panicking for nothing 😅 I found this pic on an older website entry from 2006. Apparently HW made this stock configuration also.

To me, the R9 is eminently suitable for .177, .20 & .22 calibers. I have shot all 3, and I can't name a favorite caliber between them. They are reliably accurate, that's for sure.
I will say that .177 is running out of steam at 100 yards and .22 is still going strong. I haven't shot my .20 out to 100 (yet) but its weight and BC combo may make it the best of the three calibers for that. Real world testing to follow soon. I hope!

In my mind it is (obviously🤭) the rarest of the 3 and I'm sure they hold there value well. I am curious what can you expect for fps/fpe outta it? Personally a little jealous, very nice find and looks beautiful! keep us posted about it on this thread🤩👍

Thank you my friend! I'm looking forward to shooting it! Gotta get a tin or two of .20 cal pellets now.

My friend, how are the fires in Orange County affecting you? Where we are in Aguanga (think near Temecula) we have no fires, but our air smells of smoke and our cars are covered with white ash. Last October, the Highland Fire burned to within 75 feet of our yard, so our memories are still on watch and our hearts are with you. When they say a mandatory evacuation, grab your pets and go! Orv.

Thank you for your concern Doc. The closest this fire got to my area was about 8-10 miles. We watched 100 plus foot flames burn up Saddleback Mountain. It was a surreal sight to behold. No structural loss on this side of the mountain thank God. Wow, 75 feet is too close for comfort. People really need to be more careful during this time of year. An OC work crew started the fire while moving boulders in order to block people from getting into the brush and starting fires, ironic. 😑

I think like said above today you have to go he like a hw 95 and special order it . Seems AoA you can do that. I think when they sold to china and air venturi took the German end of things it was then just .177&.22 ..

"2009 the Beeman company was sold again to Industry Brand of Shanghai, China (also known as Shanghai Industrial Company). Already an airgun manufacturer of major proportions, they wanted the Beeman name to serve as a selling outlet for Chinese airguns in the U.S. They made arrangements with Pyramyd AIR to continue to import, distribute, service and sell the high-end Beeman guns, "

Dr. Beeman was truly an amazing and accomplished man! Great article, I've read it before, but thanks for the link, McNasty. I believe HW makes the R9 and Pyramid Air imports them into the country? Authenticity of German manufacturing being the stamping of such on the compression tubes?

Idk.. that kinda reads if a air venturi R9 it's under Chinese company ya made in Germany by hw but ????? Just funny on that explanation above.

I assume Beeman designed the r9 then hw produced them as there own calling it the HW 95 ..

I use to think back when the R's had gold trigger and the HW's had silver .

Now today's there just a mixed bad I see lots of gold triggers on hw but no silver on the R's.. in the end as long as it well made ,solid ,rebuildable, accurate gun I don't care . Just scratch my head on what's up in reality..lol

I don't know what the R9 can achieve, but 25 years ago, I built an R1 .20 and was able to get a smooth shooting 19.5 ft-lbs out of it (~825fps with a 13gr pellet). I could have gone higher, but 19.5 ft-lbs seemed to be the sweet spot. If I were to guess, I would assume the R9 can get around 775fps with a similar weight pellet. However, might have to tune it with an aftermarket spring and guides.

That's definitely a mystery to me also. Isn't there a law or rule about country of origin being required on items imported into our country?

What other break barrel pellet rifles do you think are heirloom pieces? I hear a lot of positive things about the TX200. Tom Gaylord called it "The Spring-piston rifle to which all are compared." I Googled "Best Break Barrel Air Rifles" and IMO many of the guns listed where Chinese knock offs or outright Chinese like the B1 and B3 which I actually own, lol. I do like the Ruger Impact, it's a quality air rifle for the money.
