The HAM Community is growing VERY fast! In just two weeks we already have over 780 registered members and 1,900 messages. So it’s time to share some HAM Community secrets that will help you to gain more pleasure from using the site…
Firstly, let’s talk about how you see threads in the HAM Community. If you use a desktop computer or a tablet, you’ll probably see the main “Categories” in a double-column display. In fact, very much like this…
If you’re using a phone, you will see a single column of Categories, so…
Using the Categories, you can scroll down the screen and select the topic you wish to read about – or contribute to. Categories include FX Airguns, Other Airgun Brands, Hunting, etc.
But here’s the first of our HAM Community secrets. If you click on the “New Posts” button, you’ll see all the newest posts presented in one list, starting from the most recent.
That’s a great way to keep up-to-date with all the latest contributions to the Community!
If you’re a “lurker”, looking at the HAM Community, but not yet registered, you’ll see a bold red reticle next to each Category title. If you are a registered member, you may see this too, but here it means that – for registered members only – that these Categories have new content that you have not yet read.
The second part of this HAM Community secret is that – again for registered members – sometimes you will see a light, gray reticle against the category title. This indicates that there is nothing new to read since the last time you visited.
Avatars are number three in this list of HAM Community secrets. These avatars are a small image – often a photograph – that you choose as your symbol in the Community. It’s unique to you and appear every time you make a post here.
Avatars are easy to create. Simply follow the instructions we have posted in the Community here.
If you don’t create your own avatar, the system will give you a simple one using a letter based on your registered name. You can change it to a personal avatar any time you want.
When you register for the HAM Community, you are asked for your country of residence. This is not a big, sinister, information-gathering thing! It’s simply so that we can post your country’s flag alongside your posts in the HAM Community.
For example, in the screen shot below, we see – going down the page – flags from The United Kingdom, Denmark and the USA. This is a simple, but effective, way to understand – literally – where someone is coming from.
Laws and restrictions on airguns vary widely around the world. So the country flag gives us an instant visual indication that people from different backgrounds are communicating together but that they may shoot under very different restrictions.
That’s just a few HAM Community secrets to get you started. Generally the Community is easy and intuitive to navigate. We’ll bring you some “power user” secrets again in future.
Thanks to everyone who has joined so far. If you’re thinking about joining, hopefully these secrets will make participating in the HAM Community a little easier.
Have fun
