When will we be able to post an actual video on here without it being linked to YouTube?

A bit of a depressing afternoon after learning that YouTube is once again attacking our sport/hobby. They are also attacking what ever else the powers that be over there, consider a weapon. I’m curious when this platform will allow posting of videos directly so that we can continue to provide reviews without the need to attach a YouTube link. That platform is essentially an enemy of our constitution as well as our air hobby.

Waaay back, when I started Hard Air Magazine, I had to make a choice between making a "video magazine" hosted for free on YouTube, or a magazine with "static content" where I own - and pay for - the hosting. I chose the latter and have sucked-up the cost ever since due to fears of precisely the issue you mention.

Hosting video on the HAM Community is a possibility. But there's a TON of work to make it work. Plus another TON of additional bandwidth charges. In other words, (relatively) big Bucks!

It would be a very significant business decision for me to add video hosting to the HAM Community. I'll keep it under consideration, but please don't hold your breath...

Thank you @Billm for posting the link, I had gone to bed before I saw the reply from @hameditor asking me to do the same. And I get the static posts, and I would agree with anyone that says the static posts are a fine mode for information sharing. There are also a group of shooters in our sport that do an excellent job in video format that’s all. I lean much more towards the static side myself. In the end, I hate to see the cancel culture still surviving.

I hate to see censorship, but I also see some serious issues with the way YouTubers handle their transparency about sponsorship and financial benefits. That includes some of the posts in forums like HAM. Personally I think if a poster is connected to a brand in any way or even a team for that matter, it should be disclosed in their signature tag line. I’m going to read a post through a different lens if I know that they have a financial interest, than I would just talking to a fellow shooter. Not a negative lens, I would just read it in context. Not to mention the fact that if no one knows of your brand connection, you’re not doing your sponsors any favors. But, this is really a different topic.

I understand your cost associated with running a forum. As well as work related to keeping it running smoothly. I use to own a forum I built named, 'Trout Anglers NW'. It was a free but private forum for like-minded stillwater flyfishing trout anglers. Members had to be invited to join. I paid for all cost myself.

I like the way this forum runs and find it just fine with, or without the ability to post video.

I too had my own Vbulletin forums that I ran for my hobby business. They’re hard to maintain, expensive and even harder to encourage participation. I allowed videos, but limited the length and file size. But, I leased a VOS server and administered it myself and so I had plenty of storage and bandwidth. It’s very difficult to compete with FB groups. Steve has done a wonderful job with Ham. This is definitely my favorite airgun forum. I do wish we could post videos, but with or without I’m happy to be here.

That's why we have two webmasters - one for the original HAM Wordpress site, the other for the Community. I would probably need a third if we had to serve-up videos, let alone the server hardware (or hosting), software etc.

Going back to the original point. That's why YouTube is such an attractive option. Once you have created the content, someone else pays for and manages all the (significant) "back end" complexity. It's effectively free and you may even earn something from the clicks.

If the issue is that YouTube censors the videos and so posters here can no longer link to their videos there, there is a solution. Post your videos on Rumble. Rumble is airgun friendly. The usual complaint about rumble is the lack of viewer audience. But, if you’re mainly using it as a free video hosting platform to enable you to link to videos elsewhere, viewer audience doesn’t matter. Eventually the shooting sports video community will have to move to another platform such as Tumbler.
