Three for each caliber: plinking, hunting, target; and since one is none and two is one, times 2, now if you compete, three for each discipline you compete in. Heirloom, historical and unique models that strike your fancy, and of course pistols. That should pretty much cover it, unless you're ambidextrous and the model of gun you like isn't, than times two again. Any more than this and you are just wasting money that should be spent on ammo. Need is very subjective.
