Break Barrel Early HW50 - convert leather to Vortek piston seal?

Hi all,

I don't know much about these conversions, except that there are mixed feelings about them.
I think that I'd like to try it for my "Gen 1" HW50 (not the same design as sold today, basically an HW55 in sporting trim).
Even with a neatsfoot oil treatment for the seal, my rifle is shooting 7.0 wadcutters around 630 fps (6 fpe).
My guess is that it should be an 8 or more fpe rifle. And since Vortek lists it as a no modifications needed upgrade, I don't see the harm in giving it a try.

Of course, I'd much rather hear from people with experience in this, so please chime in if you can.

I'd thought 700fps max is that guns limit .. like new 650 fps ?

Well pa blog got some on the leather seals to inspect or refresh one

Seemed over in India some were still for sale ( hw leather seals)

Well, I'm a bit of a purist myself, so I hesitate to update any of.the older guns.
Still, the HW50 really seems to be struggling, and since the kit is good for a number of rifles that I own, I think I'd like to have one (or two) on hand when I eventually open these rifles up.
It may be that the OD of.the leather has been burned from repeated dry use, and can be freshened up. If not, I may opt for the conversion.

Well the oil keeps it swollen and supple
That leather is tough and 90% if it's not falling apart detearayed you should be able to recondition it and be good to go.

Honestly. 600-650+/- in a old leather seal 50 ain't bad .. I can as looking at that on old forums . I think darn hot ..
