There’s a secret benefit of Umarex NitroAir cartridges that one’s talking about. It’s endless dry air for your PCP air rifle! Dry Air For Your PCP – It’s Tough To Get​


First, humidity is everywhere and humidity means water vapor – the mortal enemy of the PCP airgun. This interesting web site lists average Relative Humidity values for every state in the USA.

It tells us that the ambient Relative Humidity across the USA averages-out at no less than 78.7% in the morning (between about 4 and 6:00 AM) on an annual basis. In the afternoon, between about 3 and 5:00PM, the average falls to 52.4%.

So what do we learn from that?

Well, if you are using a hand pump or electric compressor without desiccant system, it’s better to fill your PCP in the afternoon than in the morning. That – in itself – is news to me!

Secondly it’s a reminder that everyone using a HPA hand pump or electric compressor to fill their PCP really needs a desiccant system in place to minimize moisture ingress during filling. And by that, I don’t mean just an inline “cigarette butt filter”, but something more significant. Much more significant…

Airgunners have become used to ever-higher pressures in our PCP airguns. We now think of 3,000 PSI as a “low” fill pressure and 4,500 PSI as “normal” in many cases. But it’s a sobering thought to realize that 3,000 PSI represents no less than 204 TIMES more than normal atmospheric pressure at Sea Level. You can make that 306 TIMES more for 4,500 PSI.

Such pressures take the effect of even that 52.4% afternoon Relative Humidity completely off the charts for corrosion inside your airgun. It means that even the tiniest remaining amount of moisture passing through your desiccant system can have a cumulatively-disastrous effect inside your air rifle. And the higher the pressure, the greater the corrosion.

This means that those bargain-basement $100+ HPA hand pumps, or $150-$300 HPA compressors (with no desiccant system whatsoever) become instantly less attractive when you understand that they are pumping appreciable amounts of damaging water vapor directly into your PCP air rifle every time you use them. They are killing your gun every time use use them!


Dry Air For Your PCP – What Are The Choices?​


But how to get dry air for your air rifle?

Well, you can use a large HPA tank to store dry air from a dive shop, paintball store or similar location with an extremely-expensive air compressor with advanced desiccant system. But the tank is expensive ($500 to $800 for a large one, as in the photo below), the fills generally cost $20.00 or more a pop, plus there’s the cost, time and inconvenience of travel to the facility. And don’t forget the costs and time for that 5-yearly tank hydro test you’ll need to stay compliant with regulations.

Another way is to buy a high-end HPA compressor plus dedicated desiccant system. For example, let’s look at the Air Venturi EVO-310 Compressor by Hill. We’ll need to add the Hill Dry-Pack Pro Air Dryer System to add that desiccant capability: that makes a total of $1,660. Oh, plus Dry-Pack refills cost about $43 per pack of four: these will be required on an occasional but repeating basis to absorb that pesky moisture.

Very timely post. I will be eagerly following future reports and comments. I’m one of those nuts who does not use moisture removal filtration. Instead I refill indoors only at 75 degrees Fahrenheit year round. I also repeatedly exhaust the compressor. Last but certainly not least every pcp intake gets at least two drops of a correct silicon every time I refill. Been doing this for 3 plus years now with no adverse affect on accuracy or regulator issues. But I’m too old and twitchy to go inside to check corrosion. I have two Kompletes and an air converter so I enjoy nitrogen, CO2 or air whichever I choose. The adaptor for using nitrogen or CO2 is on my watch list. Maybe your tests will show benefits for moisture control when sometimes using the cartridge you describe in this report.

Does that adaptor have a shut off valve allowing removal of partially filled cartridge?

How do you like shooting it on C02? I have thought about going that route but if I do I would want the adapter they lets me take out the C02 cartridge without losing it.

Using CO2 in either my .177 or .22 Komplete works well. Accuracy is similar as when using Nitrogen. Of course velocities are quite different as expected. You can reread Stephen’s tests for details on velocity, number of useful shots, etc. Do remember to use a correct high temperature silicon even on CO2 cartridges to avoid issues when using a refillable air cartridge.

I shoot both nitrogen and CO2 cartridges completely empty before removing. The valve design allows partially used CO2 or nitrogen cartridges to be left installed between shooting sessions.

One thing readers need to know is that the numbers you stated in the article are relative humility. It's the percent of moisture in the air relative to the temperature and barametec pressure. Cold air typically can't hold as much moisture as warmer air. So the 75% RH in the morning may contain the same amount of moisture as the 50% RH in the afternoon.

Dry Air For Your PCP – It’s Tough To Get​


First, humidity is everywhere and humidity means water vapor – the mortal enemy of the PCP airgun. This interesting web site lists average Relative Humidity values for every state in the USA.

It tells us that the ambient Relative Humidity across the USA averages-out at no less than 78.7% in the morning (between about 4 and 6:00 AM) on an annual basis. In the afternoon, between about 3 and 5:00PM, the average falls to 52.4%.

So what do we learn from that?

Well, if you are using a hand pump or electric compressor without desiccant system, it’s better to fill your PCP in the afternoon than in the morning. That – in itself – is news to me!

Secondly it’s a reminder that everyone using a HPA hand pump or electric compressor to fill their PCP really needs a desiccant system in place to minimize moisture ingress during filling. And by that, I don’t mean just an inline “cigarette butt filter”, but something more significant. Much more significant…

Airgunners have become used to ever-higher pressures in our PCP airguns. We now think of 3,000 PSI as a “low” fill pressure and 4,500 PSI as “normal” in many cases. But it’s a sobering thought to realize that 3,000 PSI represents no less than 204 TIMES more than normal atmospheric pressure at Sea Level. You can make that 306 TIMES more for 4,500 PSI.

Such pressures take the effect of even that 52.4% afternoon Relative Humidity completely off the charts for corrosion inside your airgun. It means that even the tiniest remaining amount of moisture passing through your desiccant system can have a cumulatively-disastrous effect inside your air rifle. And the higher the pressure, the greater the corrosion.

This means that those bargain-basement $100+ HPA hand pumps, or $150-$300 HPA compressors (with no desiccant system whatsoever) become instantly less attractive when you understand that they are pumping appreciable amounts of damaging water vapor directly into your PCP air rifle every time you use them. They are killing your gun every time use use them!


Dry Air For Your PCP – What Are The Choices?​


But how to get dry air for your air rifle?

Well, you can use a large HPA tank to store dry air from a dive shop, paintball store or similar location with an extremely-expensive air compressor with advanced desiccant system. But the tank is expensive ($500 to $800 for a large one, as in the photo below), the fills generally cost $20.00 or more a pop, plus there’s the cost, time and inconvenience of travel to the facility. And don’t forget the costs and time for that 5-yearly tank hydro test you’ll need to stay compliant with regulations.

Another way is to buy a high-end HPA compressor plus dedicated desiccant system. For example, let’s look at the Air Venturi EVO-310 Compressor by Hill. We’ll need to add the Hill Dry-Pack Pro Air Dryer System to add that desiccant capability: that makes a total of $1,660. Oh, plus Dry-Pack refills cost about $43 per pack of four: these will be required on an occasional but repeating basis to absorb that pesky moisture.

By contrast, you can get into completely dry air for just $70.18 by using NitroAir! That’s the price for one Umarex NitroAir Fill Station, plus a two-pack of NitroAir cartridges.

Another possible issue is can the adaptor be used to top off a pcp? The one reviewer on Pyramid Air said it cannot be used unless the pcp air tank is empty or almost empty. Hope this is not so.

Well the airgun would have to have a lower pressure remaining than the nitro air. I imagine once nitro was attached they would equalize. Meaning you are not going to be able to empty the nitro cart unless the airgun was empty. Like using an air tank to air up a tire. After a few uses, once the pressure in the tank is the same as the tire, that is all that is possible. I hope that makes sense. Someone correct me if I am wrong

Thanks you. Good reminder indeed. While a Nitrogen cartridge containing about 3600 psi should be fine for my purposes, the CO2 cartridge would not. I only fill to 3000 psi on my PCP’s.

Umarex USA confirmed to me today that the Nitrogen purity in the cartridge is 99.999%. You're not going to get any drier air than that!

I added that information into the story above. It's repeated here for anyone who read the original post already.
 
The real benefit of N2 is not only that it's dry, which it certainly is, but is that the lack of oxygen in the fill will eliminate oring being oxydized and breaking down. They will last longer.
I feed a GX compressor N2 from a 40cu/ft cyl at 10psi at the inlet and you need no further moisture eliminating devices. 40 cu/ft will last me a long time and I shoot daily, usually getting over 2 months in the summer.
