Here’s how we described it in our HAM review. It was a Hard Air Magazine Gold Award winner…

Crosman Prospect Air Rifle Review .177 Caliber

“The Crosman Prospect air rifle is a perfectly good airgun. It’s accurate and shoots well with a variety of pellets. The feature set is comprehensive and it’s definitely good value for the selling price.

The traditional, all metal, construction will appeal to many and gives a definite solidity to the feel and handling of the Prospect. The action is efficient, giving a good shot count from the relatively low capacity HPA tube.

So, yes, the Prospect earns a HAM Gold award for its performance on test. It’s definitely dependable and would be a fine pesting tool, although we didn’t find it exciting. But maybe you might…”

I have used the Crosman Prospect .22 for several months now and I am thoroughly impressed. From my experience it is not that picky for pellets but, mine really likes the JTS Dead Center 18.1gr pellets. Attached is a group of 3 at 45yds. Here is my overall review of the rifle. I love the accuracy and consistency. With it being regulated I get extreme spreads of 3-4 fps. I like the side lever cocking. I put in sling swivel studs and added a sling, I also bought a upgraded magazine from Maple Custom Products. Trigger is not bad. It is consistent and adjustable. I lightened mine up from the factory setting. Shot count is good at about 60 with a full tank. The only negatives I would say are the rifle is pretty hefty for carrying in the woods. That is the main reason I added a sling. I wish the side cocking lever had a larger handle to grab. I also wish the "transfer port dial" on the side had defined clicks instead of smooth travel so it would be easier to set and reset to specific velocities. For example, 3 clicks would result in a consist fps so that every time you set it to 3 clicks you could know what the fps would be and thus know the hold over. I wish there were more stock options. That is my quick assessment. As an airgun that I use for pest control and some target work I would give it a solid 9 out of 10. Plus, the features it has for the price point is truly incredible.

I am wondering if any parts are compatible with any previous Crosman or Benjamin products. I like to mix and match and tinker. At this price it would be worth buying to dissect.

Not so far as I know. The gun was made by BAM in China. It is good but parts are not compatible with traditional US-designed guns.

With the power wheel set to max I tune the hammer spring down to get a reasonable 870 FPS for 10.5 grain pellets. Then I turn the power wheel down to get about the same velocity for 8.2 grain pellets and mark a spot on the gun adjacent to the set screw on the power wheel. The gun is delivered with a small allen key that fits the set screw to keep the power wheel from turning.

The Prospect is a great gun. The close-out price was a fantastic deal.
