Bore Shot- What Do You See?

Bill - I agree with Solo1. Shoot it and then inspect the barrel. I try and shoot first and inspect after. The reason is that I don't want to make an assumption based on what I see to sway my shooting.

This is a barrel that has a radial groove through the lands and groove. It did not shoot well and clipped my baffles. This image was taken after testing at 30 and 50 yards. You can see it was filled in the lead.

Hey Bill i just looked at my barrel and it has the same marks but much finer so im assuming those marks are from drilling the barrel to begin with as more of the scratches go both ways

I can’t say for sure yet. I polished my barrel quite a bit after last i shot it so its clean now. Plus like i said mine are very fine barely noticeable. I didn’t notice before because it wasn’t shiny thats how i noticed now. I plan on shooting it more this winter and will let you know. Doing some of this testing is kind of a pain cause the range is 1/2 hr away and i can only shoot 15 yds inside at my house. In the summer i can go out on the quad and shoot as far as i care to. I don’t like going out in hunting season near home. I may shoot like 50 slugs inside and let you know what it looks like after. I kind of think that the twist rate has more to do with how it’s shooting but don’t really know

Just shot 33 50 gr jsb @ 930 and found 1 tiny spot on a land that had lead stuck on it. Here’s a pic of my marks

Personally I miss winter and fall. I wish there was some airgunning activity here. This is the perfect place to have a warm weather winter competition.

I’ll have to play with mine more, maybe try some different mirrors. I’m using the Teslong Flexible. I thought maybe you were using one of those $1000 plus scopes lol.

You have to adjust how far you screw the mirror on to get the best focus. I usually turn the light down too

I know that it would be easy to believe that I’m just complaining about a nonexistent problem with my barrel. But, as I’ve researched the tooling marks inside my barrel, I came across other examples of this same issue. The owner of Sub-MOA barrels made this comment on another website when addressing bore site photos similar to the ones that I’ve posted here. This a clip from his comment: “
Simply put, that barrel should have never been installed in a gun. Rest assured that is not what Sub-Moa produces and many procedures have been put in-place to prevent this type of thing in the future.

Also, keep in mind all Sub-Moa barrels to-date in Scout rifles we provided as blanks. This means the gun builder is responsible for crowning, chambering, internal and external finishing.

It is unfortunate this barrel has made it to the end-user; it is not indicative of Sub-Moa's commitment to producing the best airgun barrels on the planet.”

I cleaned the bore with some Ballistol and took a few snaps of the bore. I then set a couple of targets at 75 yds. I have it set to right around 180 bar, which is what AoA had it set too, if I remember right. I filled it to 300 bar. Used AEA 45gr pellets. The other day I removed it from the stock and tuned the hammer spring. I adjusted until the velocity peaked and then I backed it off so that the velocity was 96% of the maximum. I shot 87 pellets in a varying direct crosswind. It started to fall off the regulator at around 84 shots. That’s the most shots I’ve ever had on a fill with the Sonoran. Maybe it’s a more efficient tune or possibly a slight overfill, or a combination of the two. You get what you pay for I guess. I shouldn’t expect a clean barrel with no tooling marks, a fill gauge that isn’t showing high by 70-80 bar or an air bottle that’s is not past its recommended inspection date at time of purchase. . I took some post shooting snaps of the bore. It looks to me like it is fouling on lands where the grooves are. Maybe I should have shot some slugs?
