Your favorite gun for short range ratting?

What air gun would you prefer to use for short (~5-10yds) range rat control? Under, say, $1500. Definitely under 2500.

The best gun is the one you have, and all that... I know I don't need a new gun, but momma didn't raise no quitter.

I love my Air Venturi Avenge-X Bullpup so far, but it's honestly kind of unwieldy, which defeats my reason for getting a bullpup. So I picked up a Crosman 2289 Drifter. Size and weight is fantastic, but mounting an optic is just janky. When I got it, I wasn't thinking about the fact that I would want to use it in the dark!Instead of modding it out for a scope, better forearm for pumping comfort, moderator, etc.... Perhaps I should get the gun I want instead of turning the 2289 into something it wasn't meant to be.

So. What do you like for compact, highly accurate, airguns? PCP is nice, but I'm not opposed to a good springer or nitro piston.

I've never hunted the rats but, given the accuracy of my HW30 i'd think at under 20yd it'd be and leave some $$$ in ur pocket.

I would second that mine is simply murderous on rats… Mine sports an Arken Zulus … Small package, but deadly out to 50+ yards on small critters…


Edited to add, just now off my tripod, hits on wine corks at 15, 40, and the last shot of the night wine cork at 50 yards. Hundreds of pests would attest if they could…

Nobody is gonna say Umarex notos? I don’t own one myself but I defo want one. There’s so many mods out on the market you can do anything you want. Buckrail has a pump action conversion that looks sick af… for $1000 you can get a dual plenum, bottle mod notos from terminador[sic] industries that will do 52FPE … or pay a little less for one that has like 36FPE but gets like 120 shots a fill. Or order a Hajinotos cuz you know Hajimoto is gonna treat you right. Either way it seems all the reviews agree it’s accurate and lightweight. You can get a factory refurb on eBay for $230.

I'd be getting a Brk sniper in .177 with the 17-inch barrel and zero it for 20-25Y. Only gun I own accurate inside 20Y is my LH walnut TX but she's no lay on the ground, shoot in the dark, rat gun... does wonders on sparrows though!

The problem that may arise wth the modding of the Notos is that “some” mod it to thrice the price, but its still a Notos… In its stock form it may be stellar, trying to make it into something hotter? Why not simply spend more for more…?

Brocock became BRK… They are the same gun, the Atomic XR is a small carbine that some by taking off the stock use as a large pistol…

Maybe in Canada, it is unfortunate that the Atomic/Ranger XRs were ever couched as pistols. They simply shiine as small carbines. And why would they not be allowed in Canada if you just simply permanently attached the stock?

Dude, you have confessed to not even owning a Notos. The BRK Atomic XR simply outclasses “any” Notos no matter how modded… Buy a Notos and be happy…

She's VERY Purdy, capable too, got this fool while I was punching paper last week( they like to nible on my trees and berry bushes), 38Y to the dome, sending an H&N FTT 820fps. Only rats I've ever shot were with springers. My uncle owns a dairy farm and is just a few miles away....I always wonder if the farm has a rat problem .

I would say to you since you are so sure… lead the way and do what you wrote above. Cobble together a awesome hotness. At the end of it all will still be a $230 PCP

Oof that stock is gorgeous. She’s allowed to be high maintenance looking that good.

Nice shot on that rabbit. Someone shoulda told him to stay strapped or get clapped … It’s interesting how different they look compared to the desert cottontails I see out here. I love shooting rabbits. I genuinely don’t like them at all so that helps. Sadly Utah has a season for cottontails so it’s only the jack rabbits for now.

But he’s just trying to shoot rats so I was trying to do his budget a favor. Last time I checked I didn’t need to have tea and crumpets with King Charles to shoot some rats. Short Range the Wiehrauch HW30 is a inexpensive way to go. And it's not loud. But a Suppressor is available. With these new night scopes coming down in price, it won't be that long before I get one.

I would not recommend a Triton Starstrike. I just ordered a Zulus but I do a lot of coyote calling at night so I’ll find out soon if it’s any good.

The OPs under $1500 budget suggests a lot of possible choices. My number one rat killer was an inexpensive, single shot Artemis pp700sa. @AnEnemyAnemone, for your intended useage you don’t need to spend bigly. Good luck with your choice.
