So there’s not a whole lot to include in this, not even a target photo or video yet. I just wanted to share a couple of chrony numbers and pellet experience from yesterday.
It was a balmy 36-38 degrees yesterday on a day off from work. So I grabbed my .177 Akela and headed outside. I loaded the first magazine with JSB 13.43 Monsters. Attached the FX pocket Chrony and entered the data. Upon loading the magazine into the receiver and “attempting” to work the side lever action forward, I discovered the pellet refused to enter the breech. It protested so much that the skirt bent and the head deformed. ….. too big?
Turns out after speaking to a very well known member on here, I won’t mention any names ctairgunner . He mentioned that the magazine spring may not be up to the task of rotating all that weight. He was correct, and therefore the pellets were not lining up correctly with the bore. I single loaded one of the pellets (not an easy task with adult sized fingers ) and sure enough the pellet will fit single shot loading. I don’t have the patients for that riga-maroo.
Enter the new Benjamin Precision 10.5 gr pellets. These pellets are very nice. Very clean looking, high quality looking and feed wonderfully. A full magazine gave the spring no problems at all. Same goes for the AA 10.3 gr which also are very nice pellets.
I should back up a tad. My Akela has been upgraded by @airgunrevisions & Mr Rich Dudek, whom I am very fortunate to have well within driving distance (little over an hour). He has a wonderful drop in kit to replace and tame the factory hammer spring action down to a wonderful usable level. It’s literally day and night difference.
Upon leaving Rich’s shop a couple weeks ago the Akela was chronographing 10.3 AA pellets at right around 950 fps with a SD of 1.2-1.5 (this is unregulated). He said I’m going to use the transfer port power wheel to reign her into my HFT ftlbs I want to shoot at.
Yesterday took a whopping 7 shots to get her tuned in. I’m sure the tune will change just a bit in the warmer weather to come, but what a joy it is the have such a simple platform to grab and go shoot. No fuss no muss.
The first photo is the JSB 13.43 mishap with alignment.
Next, not to shabby for an unregulated sub bank breaking back yard friendly plinker/HFT/small game hunter. This is the Benjamin 10.5 gr initial chrony info.
I then ran a two magazine string a couple hours later after the rifle acclimated to the temp outside and this is the result using the AA 10.3 gr with no adjustment to the power wheel (transfer port).
I’ll hopefully have pellet accuracy (target) info for you next time. I’ll be testing the Benjamin 10.5, AA 10.3, and JSB 10.3 for accuracy at the HFT distances or 15-55 yards.
I apologize for being long winded in today’s world of 10 sec entertainment .
