HAM readers first read about the Umarex Hammer big bore carbine in our report from the 2023 SHOT Show.

Now it’s shipping and is available from Pyramyd. They have it in stock at the time of writing.

As you would expect from the “carbine” designation, this new model is shorter and lighter than the original Hammer. However, it’s still a magazine-fed .50 caliber gun with a regulated HPA tank.

In fact, the new Umarex Hammer big bore carbine is around 6.75 Inches shorter and 13 Oz lighter than the original “full length” model. This makes it more maneuverable and less likely to get caught-up in undergrowth. It’s also and easier to carry if you have to travel extensively in the field.

The Hammer Carbine includes a 35 Cubic Inch HPA tank that fills to a maximum of 4,350 PSI. This is larger than that of the original model, although the regulator set pressure is still 3,000 PSI.

The result is that the Carbine gives four consistent, full-power shots from one fill, Umarex says. This compares to the two or three of the original model.

In my opinion, the biggest improvement is that the Hammer Carbine debuts a new, “sealed” magazine that dramatically reduces the sideways blast of air from around the mag well when the gun is fired.

This is undoubtedly a big part of the reason why the Carbine will develop a power level not far below that of the “full length” gun, in spite of the shorter barrel. When shooting 550 Grain slugs at 680 FPS, the Umarex Hammer Carbine is rated for a Muzzle Energy of 565 Ft/Lbs. This compares to the 705 Ft/Lbs of the “full length” model which will continue to be available.

Even better news is that the new “sealed” magazine will also work in the original Hammer. Once the new magazines are available, that will be a “must have” upgrade for all existing Hammer owners!

The new Umarex Hammer big bore carbine is selling at $999.99. That compares to $849.99 for the full length version.

Is there any plan to put a shroud over the bottle? I remember my original hammer had a shroud with mlok so you could mount a bipod etc, I realize this is meant as on off hand shooter but I don't see why they wouldn't mount some sort of bottom pic rail.

I totally understand the desire for a lower Pic rail. Right now there is no plan to make a new shroud. The larger diameter bottle would mean an entirely new tool that we could not justify the cost for on this one. I'm personally hopeful there will be some custom solutions coming about. For me, I use the rail on my tree stand when elevated (if the shot won't prevent it) and when in a ground blind I use sticks. The U shape at the top of my sticks works well with the bottle.
