Introductions Hello form South Africa.

Hi Everyone!

A new aspiring bench shooter here! Lots to learn and I am sure I will find a lot of information and help here!

Thanks in advance, see you on the forums.

Rudi from sunny (and very hot at the moment) South Africa.

Thanks!

Trying to decide on what rifle to buy, need an upgrade from my old "not so precision" one! The problem is I would like to buy local for support and also to get it quicker but not that many options to choose from at the higher end of the market.

Thanks!

what are the options?
what type of gun are you looking for?
I can highly recommend the AAA EVOL line and the BRK guns.
lots of others that people love on the high end of guns

I am looking for something that will be reasonably competitive for 25m and 50m precision benchrest shooting.

I have not seen the AAA EVOL line or the BRK rifles locally but I will look again. We seem to have a lot of Chinese brands in the shop. Popular lines are Nova Vista (I have a Nova Vista Leviathan at the moment, an entry level rifle I think) plus a few others like Kral and Epic. I have also seen a few Daystate models but it seems to be more hunting versions.

The FX line seems to be will supported here as well so at the moment I am considering the FX Impact M4 as there is local stock in 500 to 800mm barrel configurations.

UPDATE: I have found local suppliers for BRK rifles but it seems like stock is a problem, none have them in stock!

may ask about the stock I know some shops run out and have a bit of time for restock depending on the time of year.
we have a lot of BRK users here many using the GHOST for bench

Do you have any limitations, as to caliber or power? Sorry, I know nothing about laws in Africa.
Yes, we are limited to .22, power seems to be less of a problem but for contest use we follow the European Precision Bench rules and they have a 20 ft-lb limit other than the "unlimited" class where anything goes. The 25m 20 ft-lb seems to be the most popular class.

I will make a few calls tomorrow(Monday). The Ghost also seems to be less expensive (about 20%) than the FX M4.

Welcome to HAM! I don't love extreme heat but it's hovering just above zero here...I don't love that either😅 FX guns aren't my cup of Tea but if you have a supportive dealer I wouldn't turn down an M4, up here the Ghost costs about $100-200 less than the FX. Let us know what you end up getting! All the African guys on YT have convinced me .22 is "the caliber" and I agree 😎

So far we have had a mild summer but today the predicted max is 37C (98.6F), not fun anymore! During mid summer, mid December till around end of February we sometimes hit 45C (113F) or even higher, a great time to spend indoors! In winter we might drop to around 2-3C at night but day temps seldom drop below 15C and are normally around 20C(68F), not bad.

Yes, the Ghost is also cheaper around here, what kills us is the exchange rate (1$ = R18.03) so everything is expensive here. I think I would like the Ghost, only real "complaint" I found online about it is the trigger and how you need to modify it to get it light enough. The FX M4 seem to have a really nice trigger setup. I have an engineering background so modifying something does not worry me.

It seems like we are stuck with .22 down here and yes, the local (very active) guys seem to be happy with that.

I am hoping to make a decision this week and order, I live in a small town far away from the air rifle shops so everything is done online, not ideal!

I will update here when I have made the decision.

Yeah here it's the exchange rate and the shipping that kills us😅🥺☠️... My Ghost trigger is fine(and thats coming from an Air Arms guy!), so you could get lucky!? Not a bad fix at all if it needs work though. The FX will shoot slugs better, that is the only real fault of the Ghost I will say. If you just want 25-50meter comp gun as you stated either would be fine. All the best!

I know your can hear the trigger isn't that great but I would suggest that's probably coming from guys such as myself with can be overly picky.
I don't have the Ghost but I do have a concept and I have been know to claim the trigger is horrible but really its just me. its not as good as I like but with a little effort it is fine.
from some folks I would trust the Ghost triggers can be made very nice.

we have have a fair number of members that shoot the Ghost maybe they will chime in here if not go the our BRK forum and ask

Yes, shipping also hurts us, plus heavy import taxes....

I think the ghost would be a real contender but no stock kind of kills it for me, I am not known for my patience🙈

I think often people complain about something that does not bother most others, I do tend to be unhappy till things are perfect, can be frustrating!

I also found a RAW HM1000X LRT in stock locally, will do some research on it, so far some people seem to like it.
