Ghost Ghost not producing power.

Hello everyone,

I just resolved this issue with a bunch of help from members over on AGN, it doesn't sound like it is very common but I thought it might be worth sharing what was happening and the solution here incase someone else ever runs across it.

:::::Issue:::::
A few days ago my new Ghost suddenly stopped producing power it would shoot but instead of getting ~850 - 900 FPS it was now struggling to get ~620 fps with the following configuration.

BRK Ghost .22 HP
23" barrel
Red Hammer Spring (Factory HP spring)
Tank ~190 BAR
Reg ~165 BAR (the reg was this high as I had begun troubleshooting and had been slowly increasing it to see if FPS would climb, it didn't)
PW Max
JSB Exact RS Diablo 13.43 gr.
FPS = 622 (highest)

This behavior began while I was fiddling with various tunes and had degassed the gun several times following the procedure (dry firing) outlined in the BRK tutorial video HERE to degas the gun.

Verified the following:
- Transfer port correctly aligned
- Probe O-ring was in place/intact (and lubed)
- Pellet debris not blocking hammer/spring
- Hammer was not damaged
- Increased reg pressure
- Plenty of air in the tank

:::::Solution:::::
I found that the internal tip of the valve stem (end opposite of the poppet) had come unscrewed and was restricting the travel of the valve stem.
Valve-Stem defect.webp

It should look like this:

The shortcut to identifying this was:
1. Degassing the gun (I would avoid dry firing as I believe that is what caused this issue)
2. Removing the rear of the gun to expose the valve poppet
3. With the gun fully degassed (Reg gauge reading 0) see if the poppet moves when you press on it (it should move freely like in the video).

If it does not move, or only moves slightly you will need to pull the valve. I followed the steps outlined in the BRK Ghost Strip Down Tutorial and used a pair of snap ring pliers with changeable tips.

As I was pulling the valve out of the gun I noticed that there was almost no flex in the valve assembly unlike what we see HERE and it took quite a bit of effort to get the two halves of the valve body to separate.

When attempting to tighten the two halves of the valve pin it acted like the threads were galled and would not tighten, I was able to unthread the two halves of the valve stem and then cleaned up the threads as much as possible with a brass wire brush. Then I worked at threading them together working them back and forth/back and forth until I was able to get them almost tight (maybe a 1/16" gap) at which point I wrapped the poppet end of the stem in a towel and "clamped" it with a vice grip which allowed me to use a crescent wrench to finish tightening up the halves.

In the end I took it back apart, cleaned the threads and applied some Loctite to ensure that this will not happen again. After reassembling the rifle I tested it with the following configuration and results.

BRK Ghost .22 HP
23" barrel
Blue Spring
Reg ~150 BAR (was aiming for 140 oops)
PW Min
JSB Exact RS Diablo 13.43 gr.

- Chrono missed the shot, but a super sonic crack never sounded so good!

I switched over to the JSB Hades 15.89gr

Shot 1 - 1,058 FPS
Shot 2 - 1,086 FPS
Shot 3 - 1,086 FPS
Shot 4 - 1,088 FPS
Shot 5 - 1,090 FPS

Anyhow, after my discussion with the other forum members at AGN I am leaning towards the theory that my degassing via dry firing (I was doing a LOT of this) while tweaking my tunes ended up causing this issue. So moving forward I will be degassing via cracking the manometer.

I hope this info can help the next person that runs across this issue.

Thanks for posting this @robertwalsh1981 .... The Brk factory recommended " remove bottle and Dry fire till it's empty strikes again" That is NOT the recommended method and Brk knows this!!! @Franklink covered this issue in his very extensive write ups on AGN and Ham. Much better to crack the gauge loose brother till she hisses. Ham is loaded with Ghost loving addicts, ask and you shall recieve🙏 My reg was set at 165bar from factory and ya....it's definitely too hot for pellets🤪

I am loving my Ghost, BRK is sending me a replacement valve stem, which is great as I don't want to rely on the original due to the damage to the threads, and yeah, out of the box my Ghost HP was set for ~150 BAR and was sending the JSB Hades 15.89gr about 1080 FPS... I have changed out the factory hammer spring for the White (low power) hammer spring and have the regulator ~115 BAR (I think, it is acting off) which is likely due to the first time I lowered the reg I pulled the bottle but forgot to degas... oops. I have a rebuild kit on the way from Huma. But even with the reg creep it has, it is shooting very well. Here is my best group at 25 yards.

BRK Ghost .22 HP
White Spring
Reg = ~115 BAR
PW = 7
JSB Hades Monster 25.39gr
FPS = 802

Can't argue those results👍
I recall hearing for the reg gasket o-ring kit you do need to go directly to Huma, not Brk....How was dealing with Huma? I have not dealt with them myself but may at some point get a reseal kit for my Ghost. The tiny white disc in the reg gets sacrificed when u lower the reg with it still under pressure I believe.
New valve stem you say... Maybe a good time to get the ultra valve upgrade?

I believe the ghost is already supposed to have the ultra valve, i read that somewhere but can’t say proof positive. And thanks @robertwalsh1981 for the info!

I will let you know how it goes with Huma, I submitted my order for just a rebuild kit on 01/21/25 and checking their site I see that my order is in "internal review"

The shipping is high, I believe they wanted $26+(iirc) for normal tracked shipping, as the kit was ~$6 I opted for the untracked envelope which was ~$6 instead.

If the kit doesn't make it I will probably look at just doing a "big" order with a couple of kits, some extra of the disc's, etc. and then coughing up the extra $ for the Tracked UPS shipping.

Huma was cool when I hit them up for information.

I sadly don’t have a instruction manual for the Ghost itself. But it’s the same as the Alpha.

Met vriendelijk groet, best regards

======

I found this video earlier today which looks like it will be very useful for my rebuild.

As for the valve, the one in my gun looks the same as the Ultra (at least from the outside) I bought my Ghost in mid-December 2024 and it arrived in early January, so it may have come with the Ultra valve?

Yeah shipping from across the pond is horrendous for sure. Hopefully it all works out for ya! I do dry fire my pcps occasionally but I try not to...if you must, its recommended to dial H.W. to minimum before doing so. I was shooting away last summer at the bench and some hideously big spider came out of my bbq....I knew what to do😳....Sent him flying with a violent puff of air! The Ghost is an excellent gun, I plan to keep mine forever😍 Maybe later this year I'll get a slug barrel!?
Brk/Daystate got @Sub 12 airgunners to do their repair videos....smart decision. I wouldn't have bought mine if they didn't!

I am looking forward to the slug barrels being available, I just need to figure out which caliber I want to use for slugs. Debating if I stick with .22 or jump up to .25 or .30 as I would be setting up to shoot Coyote's in the ~50-120 yard range.

Yeah it's hard to pass up .22 for slugs. Such a huge range of ammo to pick from. I'd think .25 for that size pest/distance for sure!

My Huma rebuild kit arrived (I think on the 02/10/25), which wasn't terrible considering the order went in on 01/21/25. However, I just found this on the AOA site, so I will likely order the next one from them.

Also, before the kit arrived I pulled my regulator and flipped over the Delrin disc which resolved the creep I had from accidentally lowering the reg pressure before degassing the gun.

The replacement Ultra-Valve arrived today and appears identical to the original valve, it has been replaced and the gun is shooting amazingly.

I currently have the reg set to ~110 BAR, with the White hammer spring.
20250213_180916.webp

It is shooting as follows:
FX Atomic 15.9gr pellets
PW=Max ~ 1,033 FPS
PW=Min ~ 936 FPS

JSB MRD 25.39gr
PW=Max ~878 FPS

That's a pretty good price!...but that seems to be a kit for the Edguns? They might run Huma reg as well? I plan to poke my dealer up here soon to stock all this stuff. They keep many of the reseal kits for the FX guns anyways....

I’ve also heard using the dry firing down method can cause the hammer to actually get stuck forward. Then you cannot cock the gun and have to tear it down to dislodge the hammer. Sounds like bleeding the gauge is best. I’ve also read someone say to dry fire it down to like 50 bar or so and that then it’s safe to adjust reg 🤷‍♂️. No idea if that’s true. I suppose if you are going to dry fire it’s best to turn the hammer spring all the way down first.
